“State Prosecutors Outraged Over Zero Bail Release of Violent Parolee now Accused of Random and Brutal Killing of Sacramento Woman and her Two Dogs”
August 27, 2021—The California District Attorneys Association (CDAA) is outraged over the news that the violent parolee accused of killing a woman in Sacramento County had been released early from prison, committed more crimes, then was quickly let out of jail because of "zero bail" policies.
Sacramento Police have arrested a 51-year old parolee, a violent criminal with a long rap sheet, for killing and sexually assaulting a 61-year old woman, slaying her two dogs and setting her house on fire.
The suspect was freed from prison even though he had been sentenced for multiple violent crimes, including assault with a deadly weapon and robbery. When he later re-offended, he was quickly let out of jail because of policies that do not require bail money to be paid by defendants.
"I am very upset about this," said Vern Pierson, CDAA President. "There's an obsession on the part of some elected representatives to release violent criminals, expressing sympathy toward prisoners instead of prioritizing public safety."
The CDAA now calls on the assembly to defeat SB 262, an overhaul of the state’s bail system, when it comes up for a vote later this week. The bill would make it even more difficult to keep violent criminals behind bars after they commit some felony crimes.
"These elected officials need to be held accountable for the consequences of letting violent people out so they are free to re-offend," Pierson said. "This needs to stop."
