It’s pouring out there, so please, please take a second to read my PSA and share to help your neighbors. Insurance rates are already high. Follow these tips to keep from needlessly increasing your insurance costs.
If you find water where it doesn’t belong, here’s what to do before you panic or dial your insurance:
Stop the damage – Grab towels, a shop vac, or call a water restoration company (we know some good ones - if you don't know who to call, call us at 785.562.2202 and we can refer you) to help mitigate further loss.
Document EVERYTHING – Take pics, videos, keep receipts. Don't throw ANYTHING away yet. Your insurer needs to see the mess.
Get an estimate – Know what you're dealing with and whether it’s worth filing.
Check that deductible – If it’s a $2,000 fix and your deductible is $2,500... you might consider whether that is worth it.
THEN call your insurance agent – Ask if you have water backup coverage or flood insurance (Spoiler: they are NOT the same!).
🔹 Water Backup = sump pump failure, sewer line backup, drains overflowing with reverse flow of water
🔹 Flood Insurance = rising water from coming in from the outside (think overflowing creek, massive rain)
⚠️ Don’t file a claim unless it makes financial sense AND you’re covered. A bad claim = higher rates or non-renewals later. No one wants that.
