The Veterans Affairs (VA) Home Loan program offers significant features to veterans, active-duty service members, and eligible surviving spouses, helping them become homeowners.
Basic Eligibility Requirements:
■ To qualify, individuals must have completed 2 years of uninterrupted active duty (for enlistees after 9/7/1980 or Officers after 10/16/1981). If discharged, a minimum requirement is to have a discharge that is classified as "Under Honorable Conditions.
■ 6 years of cumulative service in the Selected Reserves or National Guard is required. If discharged, an "Honorable" discharge is necessary. It is crucial to mention that Reservist/National Guard boot camp does contribute to meeting the 6-year requirement.
■ 90 days of consecutive active duty under USC Title 10, followed by an honorable discharge, is required for military service members.
■ 181 days of consecutive active duty during peacetime are required for the following timeframes: (7/26/1947 – 6/26/1950 or 2/1/1955 – 8/4/1964 or 5/8/1975 – 8/1/1990)
■ Active duty and Reserve/NG service cannot be combined.
