RAGBRAI came to Marshalltown yesterday and I used one of my Action Teams to help Hope UMC serve a meal to the bicyclists. It was a big team effort, with the proceeds from the free will offering going to our food pantry. It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun showing hospitality to the riders from all over the U.S.

For everyone who has Action Teams, I think you will find this inspiring! (This is shared with permission by all involved.)

Memorable Moment from Action Team: I asked the boys (both age 12) what they would do to help the community if they had some money. They said they would feed hungry people. I applied for the Action Team, but entrusted them to do the "heavy lifting." They talked about where they would shop and what they would get. My wife took the boys to two stores to purchase food and water. They compared prices and food items, decided what could be shelf stable in our local blessing boxes and what should be distributed through the Emergency Food Box. They purchased the food, organized it based on where it would go, and carried the food (in heat indexes above 100!). They purchased over 250 pounds of food and delivered it. One of the best parts-- both of the boys asked if they could do this again next year!

Last night was the Summerfest parade in Bondurant and my colleagues and I participated. It was really fun to toss candy to the crowd. But the most popular items were, as always, the Thrivent t-shirts. IYKYK

Today at Hope United Methodist Church we completed a service project between Easter Sunrise service and regular worship.

Thrivent partners with Wine to Water, a global non profit preserving life and dignity through the power of clean water. This initiative includes assembling water filters. One water filter can provide clean water to 12 people for 10 years! Today we were able to assemble 39 of these filters. The filters will make a difference for people who do not have access to safe water, a basic human need most of us take for granted.

The water filter kits are called Cause Kits and are available to Thrivent members by calling the member interaction center. Since 2021, Thrivent members and friends have sponsored and assembled more than 35,000 filters!
