Ice Dams can cause damage to your home outside and inside, while most insurance companies will probably cover the damage to the roof, they will NOT cover damage to your personal belongings if damaged. Removing the snow will help prevent damage to your home and save the deductible expense you would incur if you had to file a claim.
According to the Property Loss Research Bureau, ice dams are typically caused by inadequate attic insulation and ventilation, which leaves the attic space too warm. The space inside the attic needs to be kept as close to the outside temperature as possible.
But even proper venting and insulation may not prevent ice dams when homes are blanketed by heavy snow.
Preventing damage can take some time but the cost is minimal – and far less than a deductible. It is not necessary to clear the entire roof, only the bottom seven or eight feet to allow the water to reach the gutters and drain to the ground.
• A “roof rake” can be purchased from most hardware stores. The cost is usually about $50.
• You can also make your own roof rake using a combination of broomsticks, rakes, duct tape or other items that allow you to pull snow off the roof while standing on the ground.
The tools needed to remove the snow from your roof are often available at local hardware stores.
