College may feel like a long way off when your child or grandchild is still young.

But when it comes to preparing financially, time can be one of your greatest resources.

College planning doesn’t have to begin with a large deposit or a promise to pay every dollar of tuition. It can begin with a much simpler question:

“What can we do today to create more choices for them tomorrow?”

Starting earlier gives families more time to save and more flexibility to adjust as life changes. And for grandparents who want to contribute to a child’s future, college planning can also become part of a larger conversation about legacy.

The important thing is that college savings should not happen in isolation. Your own retirement, emergency savings, insurance needs and overall financial security still matter.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. There is, however, tremendous value in understanding your options before the tuition bills arrive.

That’s what The RoMaR Wednesday Brief is about.

Who Pays If You Need Help Taking Care of Yourself?

We plan for retirement.

We plan where we want to live, what we’d like to do, and how much income we’ll need.

But there is one conversation families often postpone:

What happens if I eventually need help taking care of myself?

Long-term care isn’t limited to living in a nursing home. Care may be needed at home, in an assisted-living setting, or in another supportive environment.

And the cost has to come from somewhere.

Depending upon your circumstances, that could mean personal savings and income, certain insurance benefits, family resources, long-term care coverage, or Medicaid for those who meet its eligibility requirements.

This is also where an important misconception can become costly: Medicare is not comprehensive long-term care insurance.

You don’t have to know today whether you’ll ever need care.

But you should know how you would pay for it if you do.

That’s not expecting the worst.

That’s planning so your family isn’t forced to make financial decisions during an emotional crisis.

You Have Life Insurance Through Work. Is That Enough?

“I have life insurance through my job.”

I hear this often—and employer-provided life insurance can be a valuable benefit.

But there is another question worth asking:

Does the coverage belong to you—or to your employment?

Your employer determines the benefits it offers. If you retire, change jobs, are laid off, or the employer changes its benefit package, your coverage may change or end. Some plans allow you to continue or convert coverage, but the terms and cost can be different.

That becomes especially important as our lives change.

You may have purchased a home. Your income may have increased. You may now have children or grandchildren. You may be caring for aging parents. You may have accumulated debt or begun thinking differently about the legacy you want to leave.

The life insurance benefit that seemed sufficient years ago may no longer reflect the life you’ve built.

This isn’t about buying more insurance simply because more is available.

It’s about knowing what you have, what you need it to accomplish, and whether it will still be there when you need it.

Take a look at your benefits before you assume you’re fully covered.

What Medicare Doesn’t Cover May Matter More Than What It Does

Turning 65 often brings a sense of relief: I’ll have Medicare.

But having Medicare and understanding Medicare are two very different things.

Medicare provides important health coverage, but it was never designed to pay every healthcare expense you may experience in retirement. There are deductibles and cost-sharing to consider, prescription coverage requires its own decisions, and one of the biggest areas of confusion is long-term care.

Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing custodial care simply because you can no longer safely manage everyday activities on your own.

And that matters.

Because retirement planning isn’t only about asking:

“Will I have enough income?”

We also need to ask:

“What happens to my finances if my health changes?”

The answer may involve Medicare coverage, supplemental insurance, long-term care planning, savings, or other resources. There is no single answer for every family.

At RoMaR Financial, I believe you should understand what you’re planning for before anyone asks you to buy something.

Most people believe that if they didn’t purchase long-term care insurance years ago, they have no options. That isn’t always true.

While traditional long-term care insurance becomes more difficult to obtain as we age, there are still strategies that can help protect your retirement savings and prepare for the unexpected.

Planning may include:
✔ Setting aside assets for future care
✔ Understanding how home equity may fit into your plan
✔ Exploring VA benefits if you qualify
✔ Knowing what Medicare and Medicaid do—and don’t—cover
✔ Reviewing other available insurance solutions

The key isn’t waiting until a health crisis forces difficult decisions. The key is having a plan before you need one.

At RoMaR Financial, I help individuals and families understand their options so they can make informed decisions with confidence.

Because protecting your retirement isn’t just about growing your assets—it’s about protecting them when life changes.

What if the greatest threat to your retirement isn’t running out of money… but needing care?

Most people insure their home, their car, and even their phone. Yet many overlook one of the biggest financial risks they may ever face—long-term care.

Here’s what many people don’t realize:

✔️ Medicare does not pay for most long-term custodial care.
✔️ Waiting until you need coverage is often too late.
✔️ Planning early can help protect your savings, preserve your independence, and give your family more choices when difficult decisions arise.

Long-term care insurance isn’t just about paying for care.
It’s about protecting the life you’ve worked so hard to build.

At RoMaR Financial, we believe planning isn’t about fear—it’s about preparing with confidence.

If you’ve ever wondered:
• Is long-term care insurance right for me?
• When should I buy it?
• What are my options?

Let’s have a conversation before a health event forces the decision.
