The best time to prepare your home for winter is a nice afternoon in September, not a freezing Tuesday when you’re holding a flashlight between your teeth.

Paul's September checklist includes clearing the gutters, looking for damaged branches near the house, replacing the furnace filter and testing the heat before it’s truly needed.

We can’t help Ian prepare for a “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” moment. That one might be beyond our expertise.

Fortunately, preparing for most unexpected situations is a little more manageable. You don’t have to spend your entire Saturday building an emergency plan. Start with one small task: Check your flashlight batteries, store some water, write down important phone numbers or choose a family meeting place.

Ian may need a different kind of rescue plan, but one small step this weekend can help your household feel more prepared for the unexpected.
