π¨ HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS: IT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE
DATE OF INCIDENT: 10/10/26
TIME OF INCIDENT: 10:30pm
Officers proactively checked on a vehicle near Marina State Beach and contacted 26-year-old Alfredo DeJesus of Salinas, who was with a 16-year-old female juvenile he had reportedly met earlier that same day at a mall in Salinas.
During the encounter, officers learned that DeJesus had reportedly offered the juvenile a ride and subsequently purchased alcohol and other items for her. Further investigation revealed that DeJesus had an outstanding warrant from Southern California related to aiding prostitution/human trafficking.
This encounter is an important reminder that human trafficking can happen anywhere. Individuals seeking to exploit young people may initially appear friendly or offer rides, alcohol, gifts, money, or other incentives to gain their trust.
Thanks to officers' proactive efforts, this encounter came to their attention, highlighting the importance of remaining vigilant and recognizing potentially dangerous situations.
β οΈ PARENTS: PLEASE TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN.
-Know the risks: Remind your children about the dangers of accepting rides from strangers or people they have just met.
-Recognize the warning signs: Teach them to be cautious of anyone offering alcohol, gifts, money, or other items in exchange for their attention or trust.
-Encourage open communication: Make sure your children know they can tell you if someone makes them uncomfortable, pressures them, or asks them to keep an encounter secret.
-Be their safe place: Let your children know they can always call you for help, without fear of getting in trouble.
What may seem like a harmless encounter can quickly put a young person at risk. A conversation today could help protect your child tomorrow. Stay involved, stay informed, and remind your children that their safety always comes first.
Stay alert. Stay informed. Help protect our children.
