Halloween is next on the calendar, with U.S. consumers expected to spend \$13.5 billion USD this year and 6.26 million Canadian children in their trick-or-treating years.

Stocks were mixed in the third quarter as economic, geopolitical, and corporate earnings news pushed the broad market higher while weighing on the Dow Industrials.

What are Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)?
🟥QCDs are an option for clients over 70 ½ who would like to make charitable contributions using funds from an IRA.
🟥QCDs are sent straight from an IRA to a non-profit organization (i.e. 501(c)(3)s, churches, many charities, etc). Clients may also elect to send their Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) via QCD.
🟥QCDs are not reported as income on your taxes, nor are they taxed as they are distributed. Though you may want to consult a CPA, QCDs are a great tax strategy and can often create tax savings for clients that are charitably inclined.

Markets pushed higher in August as AI-driven optimism helped investors look past softer economic data. The S&P 500 gained 2.62% and the S&P/TSX Composite rose 2.96%, even as softening retail sales kept consumer spending in focus. Back-to-school season adds another data point to that story, with spending expected to reach \$146.8 billion in the U.S. and \$4.5 billion in Canada this year.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index advanced 2.62 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 3.93 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged, adding 1.34 percent. The S&P/TSX rose 2.96 percent.1,2

The Waterstone team had the pleasure of serving alongside the Mighty Millie Foundation this week at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. The Mighty Millie Foundation was founded by a local Marietta family in memory of their brave little girl, Millie. The foundation provides popsicles to 182 cancer hospitals nationwide for children undergoing treatment.

Mighty Millie provides Chick-fil-A lunch to families of children on the cancer floors of CHOA each year in honor of Millie’s birthday.

Thank you to CHOA and the Mighty Millie Foundation for fighting to find a cure for childhood cancer. 💛
