Taps is sounded every day in Veterans' cemeteries around the world; its haunting, distinctive 24 notes conjure memories of loved ones lost, instill hope, and bring comfort and peace to the families and communities of those who served with honor.

Earlier this week I had the honor of sounding Taps for Ed, a long time friend and client. It was an honor to remember and recognize his service with dignity and respect through a live rendition of Taps. My hope is that Ed's interment allows his wife, family, and friends to process their journey of grief and embrace that he is at peace with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Every Memorial Day, several hundred scouts from Troops and Packs around Atlanta Area Council place 18,000 flags at the . With that many scouts in attendance, it doesn't take long for every grave to receive a flag, a salute, and the respect owed to those who served our country.

Picking up the flags, however, usually falls to four people from the Marietta National Cemetery grounds crew to gather all eighteen thousand flags by hand. That was, until this year; on Saturday, I joined eleven other volunteers from both the scouting and Thrivent communities to collect more than half of the flags placed on Memorial Day. Next year, with a few more volunteers, we should be able to collect even more of them.

Saturday also happened to be the 82nd anniversary of D-Day; a great opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of those who have fought for freedom throughout history.
