🚌 School Bus Safety: Know When to Stop

School is back in session, which means more school buses—and more students getting on and off buses—will be on our roads each day.

Here’s an important reminder for drivers:

🟡 Flashing amber lights: Slow down and prepare to stop. The bus is warning that the red lights and stop arm will soon activate.

🔴 Flashing red lights: STOP. Minnesota law requires drivers to stop at least 20 feet away from the front or rear of the bus when the red lights are flashing. You must stop as soon as the red lights begin flashing—you do not need to wait for the stop arm to fully extend.

🚫 There is no exception for passing before the stop arm comes out. When the red lights are flashing, stop and remain stopped until the bus has resumed motion or the red lights have stopped flashing.

The exception: If you are traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway or separated roadway with a physical barrier or median, you generally do not need to stop for the bus.

Please slow down, stay alert, and give yourself extra time around school bus stops. A few extra seconds can help protect our students. 🧡

MEDIA RELEASE: On Monday, Aug. 31, at 6:06 p.m., the Faribault Police Department was dispatched to a reported reckless driver in the vicinity of Willow Street and Glynview Trail.

Reports indicated the vehicle was being driven recklessly, nearly struck another vehicle head-on and, at times, stopped in the middle of the street for no apparent reason.

At 6:16 p.m., officers located the suspect vehicle driving recklessly near Ninth Avenue Southwest and Spring Road. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled at high speeds northbound on Ninth Avenue Southwest.

Because of the danger posed to the public, officers pursued the vehicle for several minutes through the surrounding neighborhood. During the pursuit, two Faribault squad cars were struck by the suspect vehicle. The pursuit ended after a disabling collision in the 800 block of Spring Road. Officers took the suspect into custody.

The suspect was transported to the hospital and subsequently admitted due to suspected impairment and medical concerns.

The suspect faces numerous felony and gross misdemeanor charges, including second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, fleeing police in a motor vehicle, third-degree DWI, reckless driving, obstructing the legal process and leaving the scene of an accident.

No officers were injured during the incident.

An ongoing drug investigation by the Rochester Police Department has resulted in additional charges for a 2025 murder suspect.

Officers arrested Ibrahim Abdi, age 32, in northeast Rochester on August 31, 2026 for first-degree controlled-substance possession and sale charges. Police located 32.8 grams of powder fentanyl while executing a search warrant on August 12 at a residence in northwest Rochester where Abdi was staying.

Earlier in August, officers arrested Abdi for felony DWI where a K9 sniff of the vehicle led to suspected narcotics and for felony third-degree narcotic sale related to an ongoing drug investigation. In both cases, he was released after posting bail.

Abdi is charged with shooting and killing a man at an apartment complex on 41st Street NW on July 3, 2025. In May 2026, he posted a $1 million bail and was released from jail.
