“What’s the deal with Medicare Part A and Part B, and do I need both?”
Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient care, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health. Most people don’t pay a monthly premium if they or a spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. Part B does have a monthly premium that starts at $202.90.
So, do I need both?
Most people enroll in both because Part B is required to have full coverage and avoid late enrollment penalties. You will also need to have both to get either a supplement or an advantage plan.
If you have current employer coverage or coverage through your spouse, sometimes Part B can be delayed, but it’s important to plan carefully to avoid penalties.
