The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (New York ETO) welcomed the delegation of representatives of the University Grants Committee (UGC) and UGC-funded universities at the 2026 NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo — one of the world’s most influential platforms for international education — in Orlando, Florida.

Speaking at the "What's New in Hong Kong?" session of the NAFSA Conference & Expo today (May 27), the Director of New York ETO, Maisie Ho, highlighted Hong Kong’s excellence as a leading international education hub, driven by long-term investment, innovation and strong policy support. Ms Ho pointed to a landmark milestone, with all eight publicly funded universities in Hong Kong now rank among the Top 100 in the latest Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings. She also introduced the “Study in Hong Kong” initiative, designed to attract outstanding students and scholars from around the world to study, conduct research and pursue careers in Hong Kong.

The session also featured insightful presentations by Prof. Kim You Jin, Associate Dean (Internationalization and External Engagement) of College of Business at City University of Hong Kong; Dr. Emma E. Buchtel, Associate Dean (International Engagement) Faculty of Education and Human Development at The Education University of Hong Kong and Dr. Julia Chen, Director of Educational Development at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. They shared perspectives on Hong Kong’s strengths in internationalisation, education and academic excellence.

After the session, Ms Ho also visited the "Study in Hong Kong" Pavilion to learn about the proactive work of the universities in expanding their global network as well as their promotion efforts in recruiting overseas students for further studies in Hong Kong.

【Hong Kong tops cross-boundary wealth management centre in the world 】

According to the Global Wealth Report 2026 published by the Boston Consulting Group today, Hong Kong is now the world's largest cross-boundary wealth management centre. The Report further projects that from 2025 to 2030, the cross-boundary wealth managed by Hong Kong will grow by 9% on average annually and maintain first place globally, fully affirming Hong Kong's position as a world-leading cross-boundary wealth management centre.

The National 15th Five-Year Plan clearly supports Hong Kong in strengthening its functions as an international asset and wealth management centre, which is also a key component of Hong Kong's “Finance +” development strategy. Leveraging the advantages of “one country, two systems”, complemented by free, open, transparent, and predictable economic policies as well as a stable and secure investment environment, and cross-market connectivity, Hong Kong is attracting more and more ultra-high-net-worth individuals and family offices to establish a presence and invest in the city.

Benefiting from the wealth generated by technological innovation and the rapid development of industries related to artificial intelligence, demand for asset and wealth management in the Mainland and the Asian region is set to grow at an accelerated pace. This is expected to open up greater room for development for Hong Kong's asset and wealth management sector.

Hong Kong artist Daniel Wu, better known as Mr Mahjong, is transforming Central’s iconic Shin Hing Street into an open-air celebration of community, culture and creativity. 🀄✨ From May 29 - 31, the 15 shops lining the beloved staircase street will each showcase a custom mahjong tile-inspired artwork created by Wu — his first-ever outdoor “exhibition.” More than 100 specially designed tiles will be installed across the neighbourhood, blending Hong Kong tradition with the unique personalities of local cafés, bars and restaurants.

From agave-inspired designs for Coa to a lamb-shaped mahjong tile for Kyanbasu by Mt Yotei, every piece tells a story shaped by conversations with the shop owners and Wu’s deep love for Hong Kong culture. “For me, mahjong was never just a game,” Wu says. “It was where people connected.”

Daniel Wu, a self-professed terrible mahjong player, takes pieces from the traditional tile-based game and carves ‘almost anything’ on them.
