More Information:
LCHSC, Inc. is a 501( c )3 volunteer organization. Our mission is to attain and maintain excellence in staff development and management to decrease the problems of adult illiteracy and the cycle of illiteracy in Hot Spring and Saline Counties resulting in socio-economic fulfillment of the individual and society. The READ Program is a non-profit, 501©3 volunteer organization. It is made up of a Board of Directors (our governing body); volunteers that do administrative work, fundraising and tutoring; and most importantly, our students/learners. Everything we do at READ revolves around how we can best serve the needs of our students. We look for any type of accessible funding. Funds are expended to pay for overhead such as rent and utilities, salary for one full-time director, match stipend for AmeriCorps members and consumable and non-consumable books and materials for our library collection. READ has received corporate and private foundation grants, federal grants, state grants, fundraising monies, individual donations and support from our local communities. Our main focus is working with adults. When we have accessible tutors, such at College of the Ouachitas Federal Work Studies or retired teachers willing to work with children, we will work with people under eighteen years old. We enroll students who come to us of their own will or were brought to us by a relative or neighbor. Some learners are referred by programs such as Department of Community Corrections (DOCC), the Hot Spring County & Saline Counties’ Drug Courts, Pathfinders in Benton, employers, etc. For over eight years, we have trained inmates to tutor inmates at the Ouachita River Correctional Unit (ORCU) in Malvern. READ offers services to any person regardless of income, race, creed, gender or disabilities. There are no costs related to the tutor or learner – all materials and facilities are provided. If a financial problem could be a barrier to learning, we have removed it by not charging for services. We refer learners to the agency or organization that best suits their particular barrier when the need arises. If a woman and her children are hungry she cannot readily learn. She and her family’s immediate needs must first be addressed. Our main goal is to offer instruction to people in ways they can absorb. Working one-to-one with volunteer tutors offers a real advantage. A person can use in his/her personal learning style. If one way does not work then another will. Learners are assessed for their beginning reading and/or math level. Our base curriculum is the Laubach Way to Reading Series, although alternative and multiple methods are available. Students are constantly exposed to numerous learning modalities to reinforce what they learn. Seeing, speaking, hearing and writing are constantly reinforced. Learning styles that work, pinpointed by the tutor and/or student for that individual, are given extra focus. Learners and tutors are matched by available times for tutoring, location and personalities. At any time the “match” does not seem to be working (for whatever reason), staff will respectfully rematch the pair.

Literacy Council of Hot Spring County, Inc. Closes After 38 Years of Service

The Literacy Council of Hot Spring County, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving adult literacy and providing educational support in our community, officially closed its doors on June 30, 2025, after 38 years of continuous service.

Since its founding in 1987, the Literacy Council has been a beacon of hope for individuals seeking to improve their reading, writing, and English language skills. Through the commitment of volunteer tutors, staff, and community partners, the Council has empowered hundreds of adult learners to reach personal and professional goals.

We are proud of the difference we have made in the lives of so many and deeply grateful to all who have supported our mission over the years - donors, volunteers, local educators, and most of all, our students.

This decision to close was not made lightly. It comes after thoughtful consideration and evaluation of the Council’s sustainability and capacity for maintaining our operational office and board of directors. The Arkansas Adult Learning Alliance (ALA) has selected the Literacy Council of the Ouachitas to provide literacy services in Hot Spring County.

Although our doors are closing, we encourage those seeking literacy assistance to reach out to ASU Three Rivers Adult Education at 501-332-1912 or other nearby adult education or literacy programs for continued support. Stay tuned for information on the newly formed Reading Vine at arreadingvine.com which will also provide literacy programs for continued support.

Thank you, Hot Spring County, for your unwavering support. Together, we have built a legacy of learning that will continue to inspire for years to come.

A shout out to our brave and valued veterans. We love and thank you. Your service to this country cannot be measured in dollars, medals, awards or mentions as much as in the smiles, laughter, safety, security and happiness of families everywhere. You have done your country, state and city proud and we salute you and your sacrifices. May God truly bless each and everyone of you.

Imagine you are in a foreign country and don't know how to read their language and you are trying your best to get where you need to go and just function normally. Imagine how frustrating that would be. Now imagine you have the same problem, but in your own country and with your own language. That's what if feels like for many Americans who can't read! I urge you to help out those who can't read by telling them about us at the Hot Spring County Literacy Council as well as volunteering your time to help tutor someone with reading disabilities. We can provide tutor training and a full support system to allow you to help those who can't help themselves. Contact us today and help us show the world what reading is all about!

What does the new logo for the Literacy Council stand for?

The branches on the tree represent the different aspects and phases of our lives. Whether we have 2 branches or many branches, most of us have changes that will add to our life experiences.
The leaves represent the different ethnicities within our community. It doesn’t matter who or what nationality you are. We can help you learn to read better, or we can use your talents and time to teach someone else who is having difficulty.
As a community, we can help each other grow and become a better place to live. While Malvern and Hot Spring County are wonderful place to live, work, and play, we can always be better. No one person or place is perfect, we all have room for improvement (including myself). We all need to strive for improvement for each other in our community. It doesn’t matter if you only have 2 hours a week to help someone else who is struggling to become better, or if you are that someone who needs help. At the Literacy Council (READ) we are striving to be there for anyone and everyone who needs our help, but we also need volunteers to help us help others.
We hope that our new tree logo more accurately reflects who we are and what we represent. We are making the necessary changes to better help everyone in our community.
