Putting your retirement first can feel selfish when you have kids. But I’d encourage parents to look at it differently.

Think about the instructions you hear every time you get on an airplane. If the oxygen masks come down, you put yours on first and then help the person next to you.

Preparing for retirement works much the same way. Taking care of your own financial future doesn’t mean you aren’t helping your children. It means figuring out what you can reasonably do for them without putting your own retirement at risk.

You may be able to pay for 25% of college, 50%, or more. You may help them establish a 529 and invite family members to contribute. There are different ways to help.

The important thing is not to jeopardize your own future because you feel like being a good parent means paying for everything.

Helping your kids and protecting your own financial future don’t have to be competing goals.

For parents, it can be difficult to put retirement savings ahead of college savings. We naturally want to give our children a great start and help them avoid taking on more debt than necessary.

But every family’s ability to help with college will look different. Fully funding four years isn’t the only measure of success. Contributing what you reasonably can while continuing to prepare for your own retirement can be a thoughtful way to support both generations.

As Regina McCann Hess recently shared with Josh Sidorowicz of CBS Philadelphia, think of it like the oxygen-mask instructions on an airplane: take care of your own financial foundation, then determine how you can help your children.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Retirement or your kids’ college. Which should come first?

As a parent, that can be a difficult question. We want to give our children every opportunity we can, but we also have to prepare for a future when our own paycheck eventually stops.

Regina McCann Hess recently joined Philadelphia consumer reporter Josh Sidorowicz on the 𝘐𝘯 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳 podcast to talk about how families can approach both goals.

They discussed why retirement generally needs to be the first priority, how employer matches and automatic contributions can help, why starting a 529 early can make a difference, and some creative ways family members can help contribute to college savings.

The good news is that this doesn’t necessarily have to be an either-or decision. With a thoughtful plan, you can prepare for your own retirement while still deciding how much support you can reasonably provide for your children’s education.

What do you want your wealth to make possible?

We often think about that question in terms of our own lives: retirement, travel, helping our children, or simply having more freedom and flexibility. It can include the causes and communities we care about, too.

Giving doesn’t have to begin after you reach a certain level of wealth, and it doesn’t have to mean making one significant gift. It can be something you approach intentionally over time, just as you would other parts of your financial life.

As women continue to build and inherit wealth, we have an opportunity to think not only about what we want that wealth to provide for us, but also what we want it to make possible for others.

What role does 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 play in your financial plan?

In the latest episode of 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 & 𝘞𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩, Regina McCann Hess sits down with Allison Fine, President and CEO of Every.org, to talk about philanthropy and how people can be more intentional about supporting the causes that matter to them.

Their conversation explores how women can think about giving as they build and inherit wealth, ways families can involve the next generation, and how technology is making it easier to donate different types of assets to nonprofit organizations.

But this conversation isn’t only about money. Allison also shares lessons from her own experience with leadership, and what she hopes greater freedom and flexibility will look like in retirement.

It’s a thoughtful conversation about using our resources with purpose, both for the future we want to create and the difference we want to make.
