🏠 INSURANCE, TRANSLATED: DEDUCTIBLE
You know that insurance word you've heard approximately 4,372 times and probably nodded along to?
Deductible.
In plain English: It's the amount you're responsible for when a covered claim is subject to a deductible, before your insurance pays its portion.
Here's where it gets more useful.
Say a covered loss causes $10,000 in damage to your home and your applicable deductible is $1,000.
You don't hand your insurance company $1,000.
Generally, that $1,000 is subtracted from the covered claim payment, leaving the insurer responsible for the remaining covered amount, subject to your policy terms.
But here's the part worth checking:
👉 Do you know what your deductible actually is?
Some homeowners policies can have different deductibles for certain types of losses, and deductibles may be a flat dollar amount or percentage depending on the policy.
So next time someone says “deductible”, no polite insurance nodding required. 😏
Pull out your policy and find yours.
Insurance has a language problem. We're fixing it four words at a time.
Coverage, deductibles and claim payments vary by policy, carrier and cause of loss.
