I am asked to help with 40-50 animals in high kill shelters every day. About the same number of request I get for political contributions. I am now forwarding the request for help with the animals, who I am helping as best I can, to the politicians asking for more money along with this message:

I fight day and night to save these dogs on death row. I have contributed again and again to your request.

How much can you contribute to stop the killing?

So many unhoused in Los Angeles while 65%+ don’t even own their own homes and are treated badly by the evil landlords who do! Karen Whatever, the mayor is clueless and does not comprehend the value of property ownership where people have control for themselves and their rents don’t go up and eventually their home is paid off! Her efforts are just feeding more tax credits and housing into the hands of these unscrupulous developers guised as supposed low income housing! Each time someone is placed out of their home their animals end up at these high kill shelters. And the puppies keep pouring out such that now the puppies are being killed too because we have a huge shortage of availability of spay/neuter sites!

I want to know what you are going to do about that as this horrible phenomenon spreads across the US!?

Respectfully, Your neighbor, Jacqueline Tomlinson

I think we have every right to be angry in Los Angeles ans other areas as we see so much taxation as those funds are being ged into inappropriate places and Not going where they should!
Thankfully, I am a nobody and nobody sees my post on FB anymore for some reason, as where I used to get sometimes 2,500 responses. I wonder if Mark Zuckerberg is telling the truth about censorship although I don’t see why my post would be censored when as you can read I usually post about animals.
Is there a social media that is more free flowing?

“Finding loving homes for pets in our Centers is a collaborative effort between rescue partners, the community and LA Animal Services,” said Staycee Dains, General Manager for LA Animal Services. “With our shelters beyond capacity with amazing pets, we are grateful for the continued support of the Paula Kent Meehan Pet Care Foundation to help us find homes for the animals in our care.”

“This is an excellent opportunity to save a life by bringing home a great new companion animal and helping to ensure there is life-saving space in the City shelters for animals with nowhere else to go,” said Bill Crowe, Director of The Paula Kent Meehan Pet Care Foundation.

Dogs and cats adopted from LA Animal Services join their new families already spayed or neutered, vaccinated, licensed, and microchipped. Adopters also receive a Petco flyer with discounts to help make their pet adoption a success, a VCA Healthy Start Certificate, which provides up to $250 of follow up veterinary care within the first 14 days of adoption, and (while supplies last) a complimentary dog or cat bed thanks to a donation from Chewy and Greater Good Charities. In addition, canine companions adopted from LA Animal Services are also eligible for free dog training classes at the Paws for Life K9 Rescue People & Pet Innovation Center in Mission Hills, CA. Contact [email protected] for more details. You can view the wonderful dogs, cats, rabbits, and pocket pets who are ready to meet you and who are available for adoption in our Centers by going to laanimalservices.com/adopt.

Keep Your Pets Safe This
4th of July! ❤️❤️🐕🐕🐈‍⬛🐕‍🦺🇺🇸🇺🇸
(AND ALL SUMMER LONG)

SEAACA (Southeast Area Animal Control Authority; www.seaaca.org) is releasing a helpful list of tips for pet owners to keep their pets safe this 4th of July and all Summer long. The fireworks extravaganzas and daylong celebrations are summer highlights are almost here, but they can also pose serious problems and threats to dogs and other pets. With the holiday just around the corner, here is some smart and practical advice from SEAACA for the upcoming holiday and all summer long:

1. Beware of fireworks. Fireworks are no blast for many pets, with many cats and dogs becoming easily frightened by the deafening roar of rockets bursting in air. The best option is to leave your cat or dog indoors (not leashed in the yard) in a safe, secure, escape-proof room of the house with comfy bed, food and water. Also consider leaving a TV or radio on to drown out the sound of the fireworks and to provide familiar noises while you’re out.

2. Confirm your pet’s collar and I.D. information. This effort is your dog’s “Call Home”. Dogs and other pets can become easily frightened by loud celebrations on the 4th of July. Make sure your pet is wearing a properly fitted collar with a current license and a personal identification tag in case he or she runs away from home. Microchips are also another method of identification, be sure information is up to date.

3. Have pet records and I.D. information handy. If your pet does go missing you want to be prepared. Having photos, vaccination records and microchip information easily accessible will help during your search process.

4. Be careful with 4th of July decorations. Remember that your pet may easily mistake your red, white and blue decorations and glow sticks as chew toys; cats can even become tangled in streamers and ribbon. Make sure to pet-proof your home and keep fun decorations out of a paw’s reach.

5. Call your vet. If you think your pet needs to have a sedative to handle the fireworks noise and celebrations, contact your veterinarian.

6. Watch the alcohol. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets; never leave your beverage unattended. If alcohol is ingested, your pet could become very intoxicated and weak.

7. No table and grill scraps. Always be aware of what you are sneaking to your dog under the table. While tempting on such a festive occasion, human food (bones, onions, avocado, grapes and raisins to name a few) should be off limits at all times to your dog. Some human food may be toxic or dangerous if ingested and cause stomach upset.

8. Never leave animals tethered or chained outside. Pets can injure themselves if they jump around or leap over a fence while trying to run from the noises. Cats should stay indoors.

9. Never leave pets in unattended parked car. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient airflow and also can put your pet in jeopardy of being stolen. Do not leave your pet unattended in your car.

10. Stay in the shade. Like humans, dogs and other pets can suffer from heatstroke. Keep your pets in shaded areas on very hot and warm days.

11. Evening strolls. Your feet are protected from the hot asphalt and sidewalk by shoes. Dogs do not have that protection on their paws. Adjust your dog’s walking schedule so strolls can be enjoyable for both you and your pet.

12. Stay hydrated! Dehydration is the #1 concern and danger during those long summer heat waves. Make sure you have a generous amount of fresh water on hand to quench your dog’s thirst.
It is important to take special care of your pets as you would with all family members. With a few simple precautions, we can make it safe for our pets and celebrate without worry.

LOS ANGELES – LA Animal Services shelters have been in crisis for more than two years and are working urgently to bring the department back on track. The crisis has put staff, volunteers and animals in harm’s way. Even as the department succeeds in adopting out dozens of animals each day, more animals flow into the shelter than leave each day, resulting in a growing population of animals, and especially of large dogs.

LA Animal Services has the capacity to safely and humanely care for approximately 800 lost and abandoned dogs at any one time. However, there are more than 1,500 dogs in its care and an average of nearly 50 more dogs enter the shelters everyday.

The shelters do not have the space and resources to properly care for this many animals. The department is asking the community to bring these pets home today. It is the only measure that can be taken in the short term to save animals and avoid euthanasia of animals who, through no fault of their own, are now suffering physically and mentally from either their excessively long shelter stays or the challenging conditions resulting from overcrowding in the city’s shelters.

"LA Animal Services is highlighting opportunities to make it easier for people to get involved as we continue our crucial mission," said General Manager, Staycee Dains. “The crisis has put staff, volunteers and animals in harm’s way and we will continue to prioritize making this system safer for all involved.”
The following are upcoming events in June for animal lovers to get involved to save lives:
California’s Adopt-a-Pet Day: LA Animal Services is participating in California’s Adopt-a-Pet Day, an adoption event organized by the ASPCA, CalAnimals, and SFSPCA, three leading animal welfare organizations, to raise awareness and make pet adoptions affordable and accessible. Adopt a dog or cat from any LA Animal Services shelter to participate. Adoption fees are sponsored for dogs and cats only. Rabbits are not included. Get involved here.

Big Dog Walk for Life: On June 22nd, LA Animal Services is hosting its first Big Dog Walk for Life where the LA Animal Services goal is to walk every dog in our care available for adoption. Registration is required. Sign up today here.
The following 5 things animal lovers can do every day to get involved to save lives:
1. Foster - either virtually or in real life!

Found a pet? Skip the shelter altogether and participate in our Shelter at Home program. Keep dogs and cats you find for a few days and try to find the owner before bringing them to a shelter.
Found orphaned kittens? Foster kittens that you find, first before removing kittens and taking them to a shelter.
Virtually foster a pet. Simply share the pet’s story frequently on social media and in your other social spaces until that pet is adopted, then foster another, and another, and another…

2. Adopt a shelter pet - do not purchase animals from breeders or animals that rescues did not take from animal shelters: “Do not breed or buy while shelter animals die.”

3. Volunteer - come exercise, train, and socialize animals.

4. Spay/neuter your pet and stray cats in your community - we have vouchers that cover some or all of these costs, and instructions and assistance on trap/neuter/return for stray cats.

5. Donate to our spay/neuter fund so we can help stop the overpopulation crisis.
LA Animal Services is doing the following to save lives:
EASIER VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP AND ONBOARDING: Volunteer process has been revamped and is now simple and easy to volunteer, including accepting one-time/one-day volunteers
VIRTUAL FOSTER PROGRAM: Virtual foster program that encourages people to highlight a dog on social media and in their workplace until the pet is adopted
BREEDING PERMIT MORATORIUM: The City Council unanimously voted to implement a moratorium on breeding beginning May 27th. The department is assembling a task force to begin a significant enforcement response to illegal breeding and illegal animal sales.
INTAKE LIAISONS: The department is identifying Intake Liaisons among the current staff and volunteers to help community members find alternatives to surrendering animals to the shelter.
REDUCING FINANCIAL BARRIERS: Financial barriers to pet acquisition are often reduced or removed (low adoption fees, sponsored adoption fees, and subsidized reclaim fees to help people afford pet ownership)
MOBILE ADOPTIONS: Offsite adoption events to encourage adoption from the shelter
COMMUNITY EVENTS: LA Animal Services has increased its presence at community events to educate the community about foster, adoption, spay/neuter, and volunteering
