Tax Loss Harvesting - Don't Miss the Opportunity!

With the swift downturn in the stock markets, many investors have losses in taxable accounts. Rather than simply "ride it out", these positions can be sold to capture capital losses for tax purposes. The only caveat is that you work around what are known as "Wash-Sale Rules". To summarize the rules, if you sell a stock, fund or ETF at a loss, you can not repurchase "substantially identical" securities within 30 days, or the loss will not be currently deductible. There are some creative ways around the rules, but every situation is unique. The link below does a good job of explaining these rules.

If it applies, it disallows write-offs.
