New Jersey has a college tax break most families here have never claimed.

Since 2022, households with gross income of $200,000 or less can deduct three things from their New Jersey taxable income:

• Up to $10,000 a year contributed to an NJBEST 529 account
• Up to $10,000 a year in tuition paid to a New Jersey college
• Up to $2,500 a year in NJCLASS student loan payments

And if your household income is under $75,000, you may be eligible for a one-time state match of up to $750 on your first deposit into a new NJBEST account.

Most families we talk to have either never opened a 529, or opened one in an out-of-state plan years ago and never realized they were leaving the New Jersey deduction on the table.
