There is a new scam going around that targets PPP loan recipients. Scammers are using the PPP loan recipient list from the Federal Small Business Administration, which contains the names of lending institutions associated with the loans, to contact businesses. Scammers pose as the lending institution where the loan originated from to gain access to the PPP loan recipient’s user ID. After the user ID is received, the scammer claims to send an ID verification code to confirm that the user is associated with the business who received the loan. When this occurs, the scammer is actually using the loan recipient’s online banking password reset process. By using the reset process with the verification code from the unwitting call recipient, the scammer is then able to access the recipient’s accounts.
Should you receive a call like this, hang up immediately. If you have any doubt or questions, contact your financial institution.
