As summer comes to a close, we want to applaud our 2026 Intern Cohort for their hard work and many contributions to the Authority.

Beyond supporting various business units, the interns collaborated on a Capstone Project that celebrated WHEDA employees, housing, and the Year of the Neighbor, demonstrating their strong understanding of WHEDA’s mission and culture.

Join the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and WHEDA at the Home & Habitat Fest this Saturday, August 29, 2026! This family-friendly event will provide attendees with resources available for first-time homebuyers as well as how to remain in a safe and healthy home.

Visit the information booths between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to chat with local organizations focused on housing, recreation, and education, and get ready for the school year with Vanessa’s Mommy Foundation. Stop by for snacks, ice cream, and free back-to-school giveaways while supplies last.

WHEDA joined FHLBank Chicago in Milwaukee to celebrate the success of three outstanding Milwaukee organizations and their work through the Community First® Housing Counseling Resource Program.

Since October 2025, Acts Housing, Housing Resources, Inc., and United Community Center have collectively provided homebuyer education to over 3,000 families, supported more than 850 first-time homebuyers, hired three new housing counselors, and expanded services and outreach to help more low-to-moderate income aspiring homeowners.

Today, FHLBank Chicago joined Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) in Milwaukee to celebrate Acts Housing, Housing Resources, Inc. and United Community Center, three of 14 Wisconsin organizations receiving grants through our Community First® Housing Counseling Resource Program (HCRP).

Through the HCRP, we’re proud to strengthen housing counseling organizations across Illinois and Wisconsin, expanding their capacity to provide the trusted guidance and financial preparation that help more individuals and families navigate the path to successful, sustainable homeownership.

Housing happens when we invest in communities.

In case you missed it, WHEDA was joined by Governor Tony Evers today to announce $50 million in awards across 22 developments in 10 Wisconsin counties. This investment through our Vacancy-to-Vitality, Infrastructure Access, and Restore Main Street Loan Programs will support the creation of nearly 1,900 affordable housing units for our workforce, families, and seniors.

Awards build on Evers Administration efforts to expand access to safe, reliable, affordable housing, supporting over 35,000 affordable housing units since 2019

While in Superior this month, WHEDA met with Executive Director Marcy Gouge and Tribal Governing Board Member Lorraine Gouge of the Lac Courte Oreilles (LCO) Housing Authority to present them with a $47,712 check from the WHEDA Foundation 2025 Housing Grant Program (HGP). LCO is using this grant money to purchase and install interior and exterior handicap accessibility improvements at their elderly units.

Per LCO’s HGP application, “This project will positively impact the lives of our elder community members by installing aids of independent living that assist them in remaining in their homes. Along with supporting their independence, this reinforces their value to our community. Our Elders are the stewards of our culture held in the highest regard. Therefore, our efforts show a commitment to make their lives more comfortable. This aligns with our Anishinaabe values and traditions, while preserving the knowledge they keep ensures the survival of our culture. The number of people directly served by this project is 61 elderly units.”

Not only is it more affordable and sustainable, but having the ability to age in place is crucial for people to maintain their independence and dignity as well as physical and mental well-being. Congratulations to Cinnaire on the grand opening of Aurora Place, a new 40-unit affordable housing community in Washburn!

WHEDA CEO & Executive Director Elmer Moore Jr. joined partners for the ribbon cutting ceremony and toured the newly-constructed, energy-efficient cottage-style homes, seeing firsthand the positive impact this development has already had on local workers, families, and seniors.

WHEDA awarded this project $1,137,999 in 9% Federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credits in the Rural Set-Aside during the 2024 competitive cycle. We are proud to make long-term investments that help rural areas address workforce housing challenges, support economic growth, and strengthen local communities.

With the right partnerships and investments, communities of every size can become places where people have the opportunity to live, work, and thrive.

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act officially became law on July 11, 2026! This bipartisan bill marks the most significant update to affordable housing programs in the United States in decades. States will be able to utilize new tools and resources to address housing challenges, expand housing opportunities, and increase the supply of affordable housing across the country.

WHEDA applauds this significant investment in the future of housing, which will boost housing supply and lower costs for renters and buyers. We look forward to helping create more pathways to safe, stable, affordable housing to address Wisconsin’s housing needs.

The WHEDA Foundation was created to enable the Authority to expand the scope of its work by providing financial support for initiatives that complement WHEDA's mission. The Housing Grant Program (HGP) specifically supports organizations throughout Wisconsin that directly provide shelter and other services to people experiencing homelessness.

Community Action, Inc.'s Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless was able to use a grant award from the 2025 HGP to make essential repairs to three rooms. Facility improvements significantly improve the safety and appearance of housing units, and allow organizations to preserve their operational funding for day-to-day services.

Thanks to Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA)’s Support, CAI's Twin Oaks Shelter for The Homeless Family Units Receive Critical Upgrades

The 2025 housing grant from WHEDA provided essential funding to complete the rehabilitation of three family shelter units at Community Action, Inc.’s Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless.

As the only permanent, year-round homeless shelter serving Walworth County, Twin Oaks operates with limited funding that is largely dedicated to daily operations and maintaining an aging facility. This supplemental funding from WHEDA was critical in addressing significant deterioration within several family shelter rooms—improving safety, functionality, and overall livability for the families we serve.

The rehabilitation project focused on Rooms 9, 10, and 11, which had experienced years of wear and tear and required substantial repairs and updates. Improvements included renovations to windows, doors, drywall, ceilings, trim, flooring, and complete upgrades to bathrooms—such as showers, sinks, vanities, and toilets—across both living and main areas.

These enhancements have significantly improved the condition and appearance of the units, creating a safer, more comfortable, and welcoming environment for families experiencing homelessness.
We are grateful to WHEDA for their investment in our community and for helping us continue our mission of providing dignity, stability, and opportunity for those in need.

Happy Fourth of July! This year is extra special as we celebrate America's 250th birthday.

Like Governor Tony Evers said, "...this is an opportunity to reflect upon the values we share regardless of who we are, where we live, or who we vote for, and the freedoms we enjoy that so many have fought and died to protect...there is far more that unites us than divides us, as Americans and as Wisconsinites."
