This evening, a severe weather event is set to hit the Midwest. It has the potential to produce large hail, severe thunderstorms, and potentially may produce tornadoes.

What should you do if your home is damaged during these (or any) storms?

-When it is safe, mitigate the damage and prevent it from getting worse.

If your roof has a hole in it, get a tarp over it. If you have water in your basement, get as much of your furniture and belongings off the ground as you can, and get air flowing in the space.

-Call a contractor you trust.

Contractors will be inundated with calls after a storm. Choose a reputable, local contractor, and call them as soon as possible to get your name on their list.

Here's an interesting article from Forbes showing the ten states with the worst drivers. Spoiler alert - Wisconsin is NOT in the top ten!

Of note - one of the metrics they used to rank the states was the number of drunk drivers involved in fatal car accidents per 100,000 drivers. Wisconsin's numbers were high, but not as high as several other states.

There has been a surge in fatal car crashes on U.S. roads in recent years. Estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal the number of deadly crashes climbed by 12.7% between 2019 and 2023. Unsafe driving habits are some of the biggest culprits of fatal crashes.

The rain that we're receiving in the Midwest, combined with the snow and ice already on the ground, means that many people will likely see water in their basements today. If that's the case for you, here are some tips on how to handle it:

-Turn off the power in your basement!!! It's better to be safe than sorry, and even just a couple of inches of water is enough to reach your appliances, which could electrify the water.

-Take pictures of EVERYTHING. It's important to get photos of where the water is, how it's getting in (if you can identify it), and any damaged property.

-Dry out the space. You can rent a shop vac at a local hardware store for standing water or carpeted areas, or you can use a mop, towels, sponges - whatever you have. Turn on fans, open windows (when the rain stops), and turn on your dehumidifier to get air circulating in the basement and prevent mold growth.

-Call your insurance agent (you knew this was coming) so they can walk you through the process of filing a claim if need be.
