While I was in high school, I was an avid member of multiple school organizations including being the president of our local FFA chapter. Shortly after, I advanced my education at the University of Missouri, grad

uating with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Business in 2011. Upon graduating from college, I married my beautiful wife, Rachel, a Lake Ozark native. She is also a Mizzou alum and worked for the University Health Care System in Columbia for 10 years until she became a stay-at-home mom to our two kids, Riley and Boston. We lived in Columbia for several years and enjoyed being close to our alma mater, but I recognized that it never truly felt like home to me. Fortunately, I have a wife that is supportive and was willing to sell our home and move back to Macon in 2017. We opened an office in Macon in 2018 for SBS and continue to help seniors navigate Medicare, and most enjoy meeting wonderful people each and every day. We love being a part of the small-town community, and I credit Macon and my parents with instilling those small-town values. These values have strongly impacted me from a young age.

We’re nearly one month away from another hectic Medicare Open Enrollment season. Before the chaos and noise really starts, here are 3 things every Medicare beneficiary should keep in mind:

1. Watch for your Annual Notice of Change.
Your current plan will be sending you its Annual Notice of Change this month. This letter explains what is changing with your plan for 2027.

Keep it. Read it. Bring it to your review.

2. Schedule your annual review now.
Open Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7. Eight weeks sounds like plenty of time—until it isn’t.

Don’t wait until the last week to start looking at your options. Get on your broker’s calendar early.

3. Expect changes. If there’s one constant in the Medicare industry, it’s change—and 2027 will be no different.

Premiums. Deductibles. Copays. Provider networks. Prescription drug costs. Plan benefits. All these things can change from one year to the next, and you don’t want to find out in January that something important changed because you simply “let it ride.”

Open Enrollment comes with a lot of noise. TV commercials, social media ads, phone calls, mailers, radio commercials…It’s everywhere.

It’s exhausting. It’s annoying. Believe me, I get it, you can’t escape it this time of year.

But, you really do need to review your Medicare coverage every year. I encourage you to do it with someone who knows the industry, understands your local market, knows the plans available to you, and can help you make an informed decision based on your doctors, prescriptions, needs and budget.

Don’t make a change just because someone tells you to. But don’t assume nothing has changed, either. Review it. Understand it. Then make the decision that’s right for you.
