๐ Do You Need Flood Insurance?
One of the biggest misconceptions about homeowners insurance is:
โ โIf my house floods, my homeowners insurance will cover it.โ
Unfortunately, standard homeowners insurance generally does not cover flood damage.
And here's something many homeowners don't realize:
๐ You don't have to live near a river, lake, or the coast to experience flooding.
Flooding can happen because of:
โข Heavy rainfall
โข Hurricanes and tropical storms
โข Storm surge
โข Flash flooding
โข Overflowing rivers or creeks
โข Poor drainage
โข Rapidly accumulating water
๐ก โBut I'm not in a flood zone.โ
You may still want to consider flood insurance. Flood risk can change, and properties outside high-risk flood zones can still experience flooding.
So, do you need flood insurance?
It depends on your property, your flood risk, your mortgage requirements, and how much financial risk you're comfortable taking.
Some homeowners may be required by their lender to carry flood insurance. Others may not be required to have itโbut that doesn't necessarily mean they don't need it.
And here's the important part:
๐ Flood insurance is a separate coverage from your homeowners policy.
Don't wait until a major storm is headed your way to find out what isโand isn'tโcovered.
