🌀 HURRICANE PREPARATION: PROTECT YOUR HOME & FAMILY
As we prepare for the approaching hurricane, we want to share a few important tips to help protect your family, your home, and your belongings.
Taking a little time to prepare now can also make a big difference if you need to file an insurance claim after the storm.
🏠 BEFORE THE STORM:
✅ Document your home’s condition. Take a video of the entire exterior of your home, including your roof (from the ground), windows, siding, and any outdoor structures.
✅ Document the inside. Walk through each room and record your ceilings, walls, floors, furniture, and valuable belongings. Save these videos somewhere safe, preferably in cloud storage.
✅ Secure outdoor items. Bring in patio furniture, decorations, trash cans, and anything that could become airborne during strong winds.
✅ Prepare for power outages. Have plenty of bottled water, nonperishable foods, medications, flashlights, batteries, and necessary supplies for at least three days. Don’t forget your pets!
✅ Charge your devices. Fully charge your phones and portable chargers, and make sure your vehicles have fuel.
✅ Stay informed. Monitor local weather updates and follow any evacuation orders. If using a generator, keep it outdoors and at least 20 feet from doors and windows.
📋 AFTER THE STORM:
✅ Document all damage. Once conditions are safe, take detailed photos and videos of any damage to your home and personal belongings before beginning cleanup.
✅ DO NOT THROW AWAY DAMAGED PROPERTY WITHOUT DOCUMENTING IT FIRST! This is extremely important. Take clear photographs and videos of any damaged belongings, including furniture, electronics, appliances, and other personal property. Whenever possible, keep damaged items until your insurance company has had an opportunity to review the loss. Without proper documentation, it may be difficult to verify the damage and include those items in your claim. If an item must be discarded for health or safety reasons, document it thoroughly before disposal.
✅ Prevent further damage. Take reasonable steps to protect your property from additional damage when it is safe to do so. Keep receipts for any temporary repairs or supplies.
✅ Contact our office. If your property sustains damage, we’re here to help guide you through the claims process.
❤️ MOST IMPORTANTLY: YOUR SAFETY COMES FIRST!
Please take this storm seriously, prepare ahead of time, and follow the guidance of local emergency officials.
Remember, property can be repaired or replaced. People cannot.
