My husband and I are property claims adjusters so I wanted to leave a few tips for you storm preppers.
1- if you have a fence attach it to your dwelling ( this can be done w a simple bracket) as it falls under coverage A
2- contents are the most challenging claim to settle, keep a spreadsheet ( carriers like excel) and pictures of everything in your home. Open your drawers, keep receipts for furniture and garage and take pictures often. You will forget what you have.
3- Buy flood insurance if you can afford it regardless if your in a flood zone.
4- put all important documents in the same place preferably a waterproof box or safe. Scattered documents are problematic.
5- insure your valuables ( jewelry, art, guns, separately)
6- make sure you have an excess of empty gas cans and cash
7- video the outside of your home when the storm is named, email it to yourself w a time stamp.
8- File a claim as quickly as possible as well as FEMA applications. The process is long and usually understaffed during storms/tornado/fire.
9- Understand your insurance clauses and right to repair programs. I recommend going with policies where you can choose your own contractor.
10- Secure your property to the best of your ability asap ( Have Tarps, nails etc) but take pictures before and after as many adjusters can not remove the tarp ( ridiculous) if you have a roofer do this ask for before pics to be emailed to you before they tarp.

Always better to be prepared, especially during any kind of severe weather events.
