In the past ten years, the amount of money held in retail money market funds ebb and flowed. But looking at the chart below, you see something interesting that happened in the last two years.

Cash being held in retail money market funds has climbed to nearly $1.6 trillion. When I look at this chart, I see market volatility as the culprit. Fed Chair Jerome Powell's recent speech at the Jackson Hole summit had everyone—including the markets—on pins and needles. He hinted that more interest rate hikes may be needed, and news unsettled the markets a bit.

What will happen to the money in retail money market funds if interest rates start to trend lower next year? Will it stay put, or seek greener pastures?

Jerome Powell's cautious stance on short-term rates may anticipate one more rate increase later this year, with rates potentially trending lower by December. While Powell hasn't finalized July's policy, all eyes are on economic reports like the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to gauge the situation. Considering Powell's past efforts to convince the market about transitory inflation, his conservative outlook is understandable. But with the challenging task of navigating monetary policy, we can expect positive news from the Fed if it aligns with the situation.

As we approach the end of 2025, several temporary tax provisions that were part of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are set to expire, including the lifetime estate and gift tax rules.

For couples, the amount is $25.84 million for 2023. If the scheduled sunset takes place in 2026, the estate and gift tax exemption will revert back to an estimated $14 million for couples, depending on the inflation rate over the next few years. With this pending change on the horizon, you might consider revisiting your estate strategy if you are uncertain whether the sunset will influence your approach.

The sunset's impact extends beyond lifetime estate and gift tax rules. For example, the top income tax rate is expected to revert to 2017 levels, rising from 37% to 39.6%. The $10,000 limit on state and local tax deductions is scheduled to expire, as is the $750,000 cap on mortgage interest deduction.
