Clay County Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom

Clay County Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom This page's purpose is to help keep members of the community updated about the CCFB AITC program. Most of these workshops are totally free to the teachers.

Ag in the Classroom (AITC) is a free program offered to all schools in Clay County PreK-5th grades through Clay County Farm Bureau. The Ag Literacy Coordinator, Jennifer Fulk, sets up dates and times with the teachers that graciously allow her into their classrooms. Visits are usually once a month and last about 40 minutes for each lesson. Free products, like Ag Mags & Ag related posters, are offe

red to all Clay County Teachers through the program. Jennifer also visits many community events where she does activities with the children attending. Some of these events include: the Clay County Fair, Clay County Health Department’s Earth Day Fair, Conservation Day, and Clay County Farm Bureau’s Membership Picnic. Workshops offering professional development credits are also offered to teachers county-wide through the AITC program. Why do your students need Ag in the Classroom? We, as you know, are a small rural community that is vastly centered on Agriculture. It’s important for children to understand the foundations of our community and how their food gets from the farm to their table. Why do your students like Ag in the Classroom? It’s fun! The lessons are centered on Ag related products and activities. Activities are hands-on and centered on the Common Core and Next Generation Science standards. After most of the lessons, students have made something they can take home with them to show their family. Most are really excited to explain their creations. In doing this, they are spreading Ag awareness! The AITC program is partially funded by a yearly grant from Illinois Ag in the Classroom located in Bloomington, IL. We have to match the grant funding awarded to us to keep the program. The matched funding comes from gracious donations and fundraisers put on throughout the year.

🌾 Fun Fact Friday from Clay County Ag in the Classroom!

A semi‑truck grain hopper can hold about 1,000 bushels of wheat — and that’s enough to make 90,000 loaves of whole‑wheat bread.

It’s a great reminder of the incredible role agriculture plays in all our lives, from the fields across Clay County to the food on our tables. 🚜🍞

In May, our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders had an absolute blast playing “Spot IL” — an agriculture‑themed twist on the classic Spot It game, created by Illinois Ag in the Classroom.

Every single image on the cards represents a piece of Illinois agriculture — from crops and livestock to the many by‑products and co‑products that come from the farm and end up in everyday items the kids recognize. It was so fun watching students make connections, shout out matches, and learn without even realizing they were learning.

The excitement grew with every round, and the kids were especially thrilled to win prizes along the way. It was a simple activity that brought big smiles and sparked great conversations about where our food, fiber, and fuel come from.

We love seeing agriculture come alive in the classroom through hands‑on games like this!

Did you know this surprising fruit fact? 🍓🍌🥝🍆

Bananas, kiwis, and eggplants are technically berries… but strawberries are not!

Nature doesn’t always play by the rules we learned in the kitchen.

Which one surprises you most — bananas, kiwis, eggplants, or strawberries? 👇

I’m excited to start Ag Fact Fridays!! 🥳🌱

Here’s our first one:

Did you know that every Ford vehicle contains the equivalent of 31,251 soybeans? Soybeans are processed and used in things like seat foam and even some of the plastics inside the car!

Agriculture is everywhere—even in what we drive! 🚗💡

Where else do you think we might find soybeans being used? 🤔

Our 3rd graders had a blast bringing science to life! 🦋

They created the butterfly life cycle using pasta—getting creative while learning each stage from egg to caterpillar to cocoon to butterfly.

Hands-on learning makes it stick, and they did an amazing job! Check out their awesome creations below!
