Seed Capital Kentucky

Seed Capital Kentucky Locally grown, locally known. Local farmers, Local food: we want more farmers to grow it, more businesses to sell it, and more people to enjoy it.

Seed Capital Kentucky is devoted to creating a more sustainable future for Kentucky's farmers. We want to grow a bigger and more successful local food economy. Over the years, we've hosted gatherings, made business-planning grants to farmers, conducted large-scale research on the local food economy, and planned the West Louisville FoodPort - which did not quite come to pass. For five years we have

also given the Local Food Hero Awards at the Kentucky State Fair, in partnership with Kentucky's Commission of Agriculture and the Mayor of Louisville. Because farmers ARE heroes.

Happy 4th of July! As we celebrate our freedom lets remember to honor all those heros that help us survive everyday. The men and women that provide us with food help this country succeed. So it is with great honor that Seed Capital Kentucky is able to announce the 5th Annual Local Food Hero Awards and the addition of two new categories: Farmer Veterans and Bourbon Farming.

Our annual Local Food Hero Award gives thanks to regional farmers who grow and harvest the food we eat. We are proud to announce that our 2016 winners are Tyler Greene with Sunwatch Homestead in Garrard County, Jared Goforth with Fluty Lick Farms in Lawrence County, and Sherman Fracher with Abiding Grace Farm Artisan Foods, LLC in Mercer County.

These three will be recognized in a ceremony at the Kentucky Department of Agriculture exhibit in the West Wing of the State Fair on Thursday, August 18th at 9:30am. Please join us there in recognizing their hard work and contribution to our regional food system!

We give special thanks to Farm Credit Mid-America and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for their generous support of the 2016 Local Food Hero award.

We caught up with one of the 2015 Local Food Heroes, Sidney Ratliff from Boyle County. Sidney explained how Mother Nature and a rough hail storm almost destroyed his green house last May. He used the cash prize from winning the Local Food Hero Award to help repair it and is happy to report that he was back in full operation this spring!

He proudly displays his Local Food Hero Award in the Mozybeau Farm & Seed Store in Perryville. Who is your Local Food Hero? Voting for the 2016 awards is open until 5pm on August 4th. Vote here: http://seedcapitalky.org/farmers/

Our team went to McQuixote Books & Coffee this morning for West Louisville FoodPort Office Hours and to welcome Maryam Mahboob to the Seed Capital KY team! Maryam is a member of the FoodWorks Fellowship Program from Middlebury College in Vermont. We had delicious ice tea that was aged in bourbon barrels (get down to McQuixote Books & Coffee to try it). Welcome to Louisville, Maryam!
