📍🍅🌽 WHERE’S JAKE WEDNESDAYYYYYY?! 🌽🍅📍
❤️ One of the things we love about the South End is that we have lots of family-owned, multi-generational businesses. Jiggs Fruit Market is one example of that! Jiggs is in its 4th generation, run by husband and wife Chad and Liz Melton. Jigg’s is Chad’s grandfather. 👨🌾👩🌾
🕰️ Visiting Jiggs was like a walk down memory lane with an old friend! Liz could very easily serve as Valley Station’s official historian! She knows our local and family history! Jigg’s goes all the way back to 1957, when it started out as a small produce stand on the site now home to another Valley Station favorite, Valley Dairy Freeze. 🍦 At that time, all of the produce that Jigg’s sold was grown right across the street on land owned by Dr. Strickland. That land is now home to some nice residential units! 🏡 Jiggs built the current location in 1967, although it had to be rebuilt after the building was wiped out by a tornado in 1978. 🌪️
🌽🍅 Chad and Liz are passionate about keeping good, healthy produce available for our community. All the produce that is sold at Jiggs is field-grown and vine-ripened — you won’t find any hot house products at Jiggs! While it’s not possible for the produce to come from Kentucky farms year-round, the produce does come from Kentucky and Indiana beginning in July each year. 🚜 Most of that produce comes directly from a farm in Hart County — with the exception of cantaloupe, which are famously grown in Indiana. 🍈 (Who knew that Indiana was one of the top cantaloupe-producing states in the U.S.?!) Jake’s mouth was watering when he was looking at the HUGE tomatoes 🍅 and the sweet corn 🌽 out front!
🥩 They also offer Kentucky-raised meat products from Trackside Butcher Shoppe in Campbellsville, KY. Jake picked up some of their beef tallow while he was in the store! (He really wanted a steak, but Naomi's office doesn't have a grill.) You don’t have to worry about quality when it comes to buying produce from Jiggs. Chad and Liz firmly believe that if they wouldn’t put it on their plate, they wouldn’t sell it to their community. ❤️ They try everything before they sell it. 💯
🥤 Produce and meat aren’t the only things they offer! They have their own line of private-label sodas, made with natural cane sugar! If you’re looking for a bit of nostalgia, go grab one of their root beers. 🍺 They taste just like the classic root beer of yesteryear that you’d grab from a famous restaurant that sold hot dogs and root beer floats in frosted glasses!
🤝 During Jake’s visit, it was evident that the good folks at Jiggs are all about community. They treat their customers like family. Liz knew details about many of her customers’ lives and made sure to check in on them while they were at the register. It reminded me less of the theme song from the TV show “Cheers,” which famously says, “Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name!” 🎶 You feel welcome at Jiggs, and you truly feel a sense of community. ❤️
😂 Now for the fun stuff! When we asked about their theme song, there were a couple of options that they came up with. We won’t mention the first one, but just know that it made Jake laugh! 🤣
🎶 Chad didn’t miss a beat when he came up with “Where I Come From,” by Kenny Chesney. Chad is a fourth-generation family owner at Jiggs, so that makes perfect sense! When we asked Liz what job she’d give Jake if he worked at Jiggs, she was glad to offer him a job unloading trucks and stocking the produce bins! She thought the customers would enjoy his smile while he was working. She was also thinking that her back would enjoy a break from unloading that heavy produce! 😂
🏡 Jiggs is one of those places that makes Louisville, particularly Valley Station, such a special place to call home! We’re grateful for their pride and passion for our community! ❤️
