⚠️ WINTERIZE YOUR OFFICE NOW⚠️

Most of our clients are expecting some heavy snow this weekend, including ice damage and a real threat of freezing pipes. The threat of downed power lines makes this even more realistic especially for our southern Kentucky offices. PREPARE your dental office TODAY:

❄️ For the weekend, I highly recommend turning OFF your *water main* and turning ON the water at faucets, etc. to drain existing water out of the lines.
❄️ Keep cabinetry OPEN where the pipes are to keep those warmer.
❄️ Prep your HVAC to maintain a temperature at LEAST above 55.
❄️ Seal gaps around windows, doors, and exterior walls.
❄️ Secure expensive dental equipment — aka consider a controlled shutdown of your dental equipment NOW before a power outage forces an untimely shutoff of your sensitive equipment!
❄️ As always, keep entrances, walkways, and parking clear of snow/ice; use signage to alert patients/staff about conditions. Arrange professional snow removal for everyone's safety.

Beazley's quarterly threat report was released recently. Here are the big takeaways for dentists:
- Credential Theft Is the Main Entry Point
- Remote Access Is a Large Contributor to Breach
- Ransomware Remains a Major Threat
- Funds Transfer Fraud (like payroll fraud and wire fraud) are Frequent Claims

Knowing that, here's my advice to you. Dental practices should:
1. have a standalone cyber insurance policy
2. use strong password protocol & multi factor authentication
3. reduce or eliminate remote access options
4. always verify financial change requests in a second medium. (meaning when an employee or vendor requests any change to its bank account details, you should confirm via an "out-of-band authentication method" like a separate phone call, text, email, etc.)

In 2024, Bowman Insurance is growing! We’re looking for an experienced bookkeeper. This job is part time and available as a 1099 or W2, hourly. While our current bookkeeper is averaging 5 hours per month, we expect the expanded position to require approximately 20 hours per month, particularly in the first year. No cleanup/catchup work required. No payroll administration.

Paid training of our accounting software will be provided, but a knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting is expected. Well-qualified candidates will have previous experience bookkeeping for insurance agencies. Negotiable compensation range is $40-75 / hour. Have you gotten a phone call from the DEA before, an agent telling you that someone tried to fill a prescription in another state using your DEA number?

It was a scam.

The DEA only notifies you via letter. Stay safe out there! Social engineering strategies like this are common because they’re so likely to succeed. Scammers rely on your unfamiliarity with operations (like banking or government processes) as well as your desire to do the right thing.

Multiple phone calls today from dental offices that had a pipe burst over the cold holiday weekend. Even when a claim is covered by insurance, it’s not fun to go through.

We recommend our dental offices install water sensors that can alert you via smartphone ($50-$60 average). We also recommend an automatic water shutoff that will detect unusual water flow and shut off your water main for you (~$500). That way, you won’t have to take a trip out in the middle of the night, weekend, or hazardous conditions to turn off the water when something does go wrong.
