A startup can be profitable on paper and still run out of cash.

That gap is not a bookkeeping problem. It's a timing problem. Invoices go out, payment comes in late. Payroll is due, reserves are thin. Growth looks good on the model, but the moment is wrong in reality. The business is not failing, it just has no visibility into what's coming.

Cash flow forecasting gives you that visibility. It tells you when money is arriving, when it is leaving, and what the gap looks like before it opens. That changes how you make decisions about hiring, pricing, spending, and investment - not reactively, but with a clear picture in front of you.

It also changes how investors see you. A well-maintained forecast signals that you understand how your business actually works, not just how it performs on a good month. That's a meaningful difference in any funding conversation.

We broke down why cash flow forecasting is critical to startup success, including the distinction between liquidity and solvency, how forecasting supports better decision-making, and what it means for risk and growth.

Finding investors who've backed companies like yours isn't a mystery. Start with comparable companies, trace who funded them, and follow those funds on LinkedIn. Free tools get you further than you'd think. Crunchbase and PitchBook fill in the gaps. And Flowlie helps you map the warm path in. Oh, and don't sleep on ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini - AI is your fastest first pass.

The terms of your round matter way less than who's signing the check.

A great investor at a tough valuation beats a bad investor at a great one every time.

Pick the person first. The deal will follow.

Because you're not just closing a round, you're choosing a long-term partner you'll be working through hard problems with for years.

Get that right, and the dilution conversation becomes irrelevant.

Want more conversations like this? We run live webinars with founders and investors regularly.

Clean books won't tell you if you can afford the hire.

That's not an accounting question. It's an FP&A one. And the difference matters more than most people realize, especially when decisions start compounding - hiring, runway, fundraising timing, growth bets.

Accounting tells you what happened. FP&A tells you what happens next. Finance tells you what to do about it. Three distinct functions, three distinct jobs, and the order you build them in changes what you're actually able to decide.

Clean books feel like the responsible first move. They are. They're just not sufficient on their own.

We broke down all three, including a cheat sheet for which questions actually belong to which function.

Working capital is one of those terms that gets skipped over until it becomes a problem.

It's actually simple. What you own right now minus what you owe right now. That number tells you if your business can cover its bills, pay its people, and still have room to move. Positive means you're in good shape. Negative means it's time to pay attention.

The tricky part isn't the math. It's that by the time cash feels tight, the number already had the answer weeks ago.

We broke down the formula, what each side of it means, and 6 ways to improve your position.

Cash buys time. Time buys choices.

The problem is most founders don't know exactly how much time they actually have.

The number in the spreadsheet gets stale fast. A new hire changes it. A missed target changes it. A campaign that didn't land changes it.

When you're working from a static snapshot, you're making hiring, spending, and fundraising calls without an accurate picture of where you actually stand.

Runway is a signal that should be shaping decisions across the whole company in real time.

Founders who use it well have a clear framework:
- 24 months means you can hire ahead and experiment freely.
- Under 10 months means every new role needs to generate returns fast.
- At 18 months, you start fundraising conversations, because the process takes three to six months and raising from strength is a completely different experience than raising from urgency.

We put together a full breakdown of how to use runway as a real-time management tool, including a decision framework, hiring guidelines by cash position, and a three-step system for operationalizing it across your team.
