FUN FACTS ABOUT THE KENTUCKY DERBY:
• It’s the longest-running sporting event in the U.S. – first run 05-17-1875 with 15 horses competing in front of a crowd of about 10,000.
• The Trophy is made of real gold (22 inches tall - weighs apx. 3.5 pounds)
• The official cocktail of the KY Derby is the mint julep – more than 120,000 served each year (requires more than 1,000 pounds of fresh mint).
• This is the 148th year of the Derby.
• Hats did not become a popular accessory at the Derby until the mid-1960s.
• The official flower of the Derby is the red rose.
• The rose garland (draped over the winning horse) weighs more than 40 pounds.
• The KY Derby is called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes of Sports”.
• The Derby’s First winner was named Aristides in 1875 – finished the rase in two minutes and 37 seconds.
• Only 3-year old horses can compete in the Derby.
• The Derby has been Postponed just twice – in 1945 due to World War II – in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
