Hi everyone,
I know there’s a lot of uncertainty around the upcoming ACA (Affordable Care Act) enrollment period, and I’d like to help clarify what’s happening—especially if you currently receive financial assistance through the ACA. For those of us in California, that’s through Covered California.
A Quick Recap:
Back in 2021, under the Biden Administration, legislation was passed to enhance federal subsidies. This made health insurance more affordable by:
Increasing premium tax credits
Expanding eligibility from 400% to 500% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)
This meant that even many higher-income households qualified for financial help.
What’s Changing?
Unfortunately, those enhanced subsidies are scheduled to expire at the end of this year. Without congressional action, many people could see premium increases of 75% or more starting in 2026.
California Residents – Some Relief
If you live in California (like me and most of my clients), there’s some good news. California will offer state-based subsidies for individuals and families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level.
This means:
If your income is under 400% FPL, it wont be as big of an impact.
If your income is above 400% FPL, you may lose those enhanced subsidies and feel the full impact of rising premiums.
Want to see what 400% of the FPL looks like in dollars?
Just search for “Covered CA federal poverty levels 2025” to view the official chart, or reach out to me and I’ll send it to you.
Important note: With the government currently in shutdown, there’s still a chance Congress could extend the current subsidies, but nothing is guaranteed yet.
Application Updates Matter
Since COVID, Covered CA has been flexible with many of its rules—but that’s changing. If you haven’t updated your application recently (or don’t know how), this is especially important:
If your income listed on your Covered CA account doesn’t match your tax return, you’ll be asked to verify your income.
Failure to respond could result in losing your subsidies altogether.
To avoid surprises:
Log in and renew your plan
Update your application with accurate income information
If you’re locked out or don’t have access, call Covered CA or contact your agent
