Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in late 2022, AI usage has skyrocketed, with nearly half of U.S. adults now using AI chatbots. This rapid adoption raises the question: How much of newer internet pages are actually written by AI?
To find out, a recent study analyzed nearly half a million English-language webpages from the last five years. Overall, 10% of all sampled pages show significant signs of AI authorship—a notable amount given that much of the web consists of older, pre-AI content.
When looking exclusively at content published after ChatGPT's release, the impact is undeniable: over one-third of post-2022 webpages show signs that they were likely written or substantially edited by AI.
