Many people participate in Group Life Insurance only if it is offered by the employer and most only offer anywhere from $25-$50 thousand in coverage which sometimes not enough. We do encourage people to have something in place but do not rely solely on group life. Here are 4 reasons why:
1)You may need more death benefit than what the employer can allow. For an individual who has a mortgage, cars and other household debt the coverage will not be enough.
2) Not portable.
In most cases, if your employment relationships ends, so does the policy.
3) Employers can stop paying premium.
The owner of the policy is your employer and not you, and therefore you have no control over whether the policy stays in force. It is not required by any law to provide group life.
4) Limited Options.
Typically, the policy offered are term policy and the only benefit is the death benefit. However, you may need or desire other type of policies, that offer living benefit such as building cash value that you can obtain with a permanent plan.
