The Statue of Liberty is one of the most iconic of all American landmarks, having been gifted to the United States from France by way of famed sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi. The terrific symbolism of the Statue of Liberty has inspired the creation of many coins bearing the likeness of this most beloved lady, who raises her torch 305 feet above the waters of New York Harbor.

The story of numismatics in China is a protracted and complex subject, the span of which has a depth of millennia. For the machine-struck coinage of China, the history is much shorter but still complex and can’t be properly told without imparting a basic understanding of global trade and commerce within China. Since the Ming dynasty, silver had flowed into the country in the forms of Spanish colonial coinage, which became the basic trade unit across the globe due to the consistent standard of weight and purity. See the link below for a full account from Joshua McMorrow-Hernandez. The New Orleans Mint Museum offers three stories of attractions, including exhibits pertaining to the New Orleans Mint and its coinage on the first floor, several rooms showcasing collections of jazz history mostly confined to the second floor, and a theater for performing arts on the third. This New Orleans landmark is an absolute must-see attraction for any coin collector visiting the city, and not only because it offers a well-rounded body of numismatic material. It is the oldest existing structure to have served as a United States Mint facility.

The 1801 Draped Bust Dollar saw 54,454 examples struck, 1802 yielded 41,650, and 1803 delivered 85,634 specimens. It really doesn’t take a mathematician to understand that the 1802 Dollar has the lowest mintage, but it may require some deeper numismatic insight to know that it’s the 1801 Dollar that is overall the rarest of that group today. Why?

German thaler coinage offers thousands of different designs representing various states, cities, and churches. Each one of these pieces offers an interesting story and, recently in a Paris submission, two thaler designs exist for one piece giving it a unique, dynamic history. These two thalers, known as a “Rathaustaler,” or “City Thaler,” hail from Nuremberg, Germany.

In the numismatic arena, the grain as a unit of measurement had a purpose in providing set weights for coinage throughout the 19th century. The Trade Dollar, which was issued from 1873 through 1885 and intended for circulation overseas, was pegged at 420 grains. This weight is stated on the reverse of the Trade Dollar, which saw wide use in southeast Asia. It should be noted that the Trade Dollar is also weighted to 27.22 grams, which equates to 15.43 grains per gram.

Jefferson Nickels often aren’t top of mind when thinking about great modern rarities among United States coins, but there’s at least one Jefferson Nickel that does deserve some extra attention, and that’s the 1971 No-S Proof.
