I snapped this photo from my office window in downtown Longview the other day. A rainbow has long been seen as a sign of new beginnings, and this one felt especially fitting for the season.

Today marks the beginning of Medicare Annual Enrollment.

From October 15 through December 7, people with Medicare can review their health and prescription drug coverage for 2027 and may be able to make changes. Changes made during this period generally take effect January 1.

This does not mean everyone needs to change plans. It simply means it is worth taking a little time to review your Annual Notice of Change, prescriptions, doctors, hospitals, and pharmacy before deciding whether your current coverage still fits your life.

October still has a few bright surprises left in it, and this dahlia caught my eye because it is a good reminder that sometimes the details are worth slowing down for. That is true in the garden, and it is certainly true when it comes to health insurance.

October is Health Literacy Month. If you receive a notice from your health plan, Medicare, pharmacy, or doctor’s office that you do not understand, it is okay to stop and ask questions.

Keep important papers together. Write down your medications, doctors, and pharmacy. And if something changes in your coverage, do not assume you have to figure it out alone.

There is something to be said for being watchful and prepared. This Steller’s Jay has that part down. October is a good month for Medicare recipients to do the same.

The Annual Enrollment starts October 15, and a few minutes of preparation now can make the process less stressful later. 🚨 REVIEW YOUR ANNUAL NOTICE OF CHANGE (as many plans are being discontinued / non renewed this year) 🚨, current plan information, prescription list, doctor and specialist names, and preferred pharmacy together.

These details matter because Medicare health and prescription drug plans can change their costs, covered drugs, provider networks, and pharmacy networks from year to year.

The first day of autumn is a good reminder that every season has something worth noticing. The mornings grow cooler, the leaves begin to turn, and life in starts to settle into a different rhythm.

Fall has always been a season for getting back to routines; walking a little more, cooking at home, checking in on neighbors, and making time for the people we care about. Those small routines can do a great deal for our health and peace of mind. I hope you enjoy the changing season and find a little time this week to get outside and appreciate the beauty we are blessed with here in Southwest Washington - Happy Autumn!

Medicare review season is coming! Now, there is no need to rush, but it is wise to prepare.

If you are enrolled in Medicare, September is a good time to gather your current plan information, prescription list, preferred doctors, and pharmacy. Medicare health and drug plans may change their costs, drug coverage, provider networks, and pharmacy networks from year to year.

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. Legally, I can’t discuss specific 2027 plan details until October 1st, but I can help you get ready.
