E-Safety

Sometimes the timing is just uncanny.

Yesterday afternoon we were preparing to share a social media post kindly reminding our community—both kids and parents alike—about the importance of following the law and being safe while using any form of an e-bike or e-moto or e-scooter.

Then the call came in.

It was just after 4 p.m. when a witness reported a crash involving a possible e-moto and delivery truck at the intersection of Yarmouth Avenue and 18th Street. First responders rushed to the scene. The initial investigation indicates that two teens on an e-bike without helmets did not stop at the stop sign and were struck by the delivery truck. Both the 15-year-old boy driving the e-bike and his 14-year-old passenger were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The truck driver remained on scene and was uninjured.

This crash is tragic and horrific for all involved, and we are hoping both boys make a full recovery. Sadly, it could have been even worse.

While yesterday’s crash involved an e-bike, we have safety concerns about both e-bikes and e-motos. Because of the speed and ability to modify these modes of transportation, the dangers can greatly increase, and we regularly get complaints from the community regarding the rules and enforcement of e-motos on city streets, bike paths and pretty much everywhere throughout the city.

For a while now we have been working with our community partners, schools, bike shops and more to educate folks about what’s legal, what’s not, where and why. We’ve stopped many kids riding e-motos and issued them both warnings and citations. We’ve also spoken to parents and issued them both warnings and citations for allowing their children to ride illegal e-motos.

In the past when we’ve talked about this topic, some of you have asked, “Don’t you have real crime to investigate?” Our answer is this: keeping our young riders safe is an important part of what we do. It’s everyone’s responsibility to be safe when using any form of transportation in our community. Please do your part.

Life Insurance and why you should have it.

When you're a business owner or advisor, people always ask for your why. Why you do what you do.

My why is that when I was 7 my father died without life insurance.
My best friend's father died a few years later, and he had life insurance.

There were two completely different paths that were presented to us.
My friend's family moved out of the projects we were living in, and my family did not. He developed a better circle of friends, he moved and went off to college, his mom bought him a car.

I did not get to do any of these things and developed an anger toward my parents for not doing enough planning.

I grew up with no hot water and fighting with cockroaches for cereal and other food. Playing flashlight tag through holes in the walls of abandoned apartments while stepping on rusty nails that protruded from broken boards.

I did use that experience and anger to better develop myself and skills, but it was a painfully long process. I've also made sure that if I died, my family would be ok financially.

Do your family a favor and give us an opportunity to help you create a plan that your children will be grateful for.

Do you have a personal liability umbrella policy which would help in the event that you are sued for poor driving behavior?

If not, and you're involved in a bad accident, it's likely going to cost you a lot more than the annual premium over many, many years.

Setting your family back tens of thousands, if not, hundreds of thousands or possibly millions of dollars.

All that time and effort into building your wealth for retirement only to have it take a massive hit, isn't good planning.

The following was sent to me by a law firm in Colorado.

Give us a call and we'll quote all your coverages.

Hopefully we'll save you a couple of thousand like our newest customer who came from a larger well-known insurance company.

I've been saying for years that people should be extremely careful taking advice from Dave Ramsey and his staff.

The timeshare debacle and claiming social security early to invest are just a couple of examples of the terrible advice he's given over the years.

If you need to fit advice into a skit on a podcast it's likely going to leave out extremely important details. (Same holds true for Suze Orman)

Quick Read Dave Ramsey advises claiming Social Security at 62 and investing the money. Claiming at 62 instead of 70 cuts benefits by 43% ($1,400 versus $2,480 on a $2,000 standard benefit). Early filing penalties reduce benefits 30% if FRA is 67. Delay...
