Weather experts are predicting that widespread ice hazards will continue into the evening as we face more rain, freezing temps, and sleet. Here are a few steps you can take to prepare for slippery conditions:
Melted snow and rainwater have already made sidewalks and stairs wet.
*Treat icy (and potentially icy) areas with ice melt and make sure all handrails are clear.
*Clear any remaining snow from steps or entryways before it freezes solid.
*Stay off the roads if you can, but if you can’t, be prepared for black ice.
*Drive cautiously and avoid driving through deep puddles.
Winter weather can wreak havoc on roads, so be on the lookout for pot holes. They can develop quickly and can damage your tires and suspension.
*Top off your windshield wiper fluid BEFORE you hit the road. When salt and grime cover your windshield, you’ll want a full reservoir.
**Keep an eye on your basement for ground water intrusion.
*Make sure gutters are flowing freely and diverting water away from the home. When downspouts are buried in snow, water can accumulate around the foundation and leak into the home.
**Make sure sump pumps are in good working order. Double check that the water being pumped out isn’t trapped near the home because of snow cover.
