The first cash register was born in 1879 when James Ritty, a Dayton saloon owner, wanted to stop bartenders from skimming sales. His “Incorruptible Cashier” kept a running tally of every transaction — no drawer, just numbers on a dial.

To start the week, we’re defining MAP.

Minimum Advertised Pricing, or MAP, is the manufacturer's way of telling a retailer, "If you advertise our products below this price, we will stop supplying you."

MAP sets what is gonna be the price that's going to be publicly stated. However, it doesn't restrict the price at which the retailer sells the product. This is why sometimes a consumer sees a considerably lower price at checkout, which in most policy interpretations, is permitted.

At the same time, advertised prices hold a different definition from the selling price. It mainly controls the number visible on a product listing, email blasts, flyers, search results, advertisements such as banner ads, or any other forms of public advertisements.

But remember, MAP doesn't hold the final say in the retailer's transaction price. A retailer has the option to offer a lower price in the cart, upon checkout, or through a private negotiation, so long as the advertised prices stay on or above the manufacturer-set MAP.

Food inflation constantly puts pressure into restaurant owners. With the most recent BLS data, wholesale food and feed prices spiked to 2.6% over the 12 months ending on August 2025. Even though it's considerably lower than the spikes observed in previous years, the cost increases can affect your profit.

To strike the right balance, review ingredient costs and menu pricing regularly, ideally every quarter. Some restaurants do gradual price increase instead of all at once.
