❄Winter is coming, and so is the salt!❄

On Thursday, November 12th, Clean Ocean Action will be hosting a road salt monitor training session for this upcoming winter season. Gain hands-on community science experience by collecting water samples, testing chloride levels, and recording important data with COA and the NJ Salt Watch Program. No prior experience is necessary!

Excessive use of road salt and other de-icing agents can harm our our streams and rivers, and we need your help to collect important data that can influence our leaders to make changes that will help protect our waterways.

⬇⬇⬇Click the link below or scan the QR code to register for training! You must be over 18 to volunteer.

💧Happy World Water Monitoring Day!💧

We extend a HUGE wave of thanks to our team of 20+ volunteer water quality monitors. The Rally for the Waterways Program would not be possible without their passion, knowledge and commitment to protecting the waterways. 🌊

Clean Ocean Action’s Rally for the Waterways brings communities, towns, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) together to find and fix sources of pollution in our coastal waterways. The program teaches individuals how to become local water quality stewards and help protect and improve the health of our waterways.

🔗Interested in volunteering with us? Please visit CleanOceanAction.org/volunteer! No experience needed, must be 18+.

🌊What does water mean to you?🌊

💧Our friends at Waterspirit made this wonderful video covering COA's and Rumson Environmental Commission's 8th Annual Eco-Fest! They did an amazing job capturing the voice of the community by asking one simple question: "Why is water sacred to you?"

🙏A special thank you to the Waterspirit team for creating this video and spreading awareness about the importance of our watersheds.

Earlier this week, NJDEP issued water quality advisories (including closures) for several bathing beaches (ocean, river, bay) along the Jersey Shore for high levels of bacteria, which have since been lifted as testing revealed safe levels of bacteria for swimming.

Clean Ocean Action monitors the water quality data posted by NJDEP for both bathing and non-designated beaches and provides weekly updates on Tuesday and Wednesday on our social media to keep you informed of these conditions and any changes that may occur. We encourage everyone to check our social media (Instagram and Facebook ) for these updates so you are aware of the status.

If you are curious to learn more, we encourage you to visit the NJ Beach Monitoring Program's website, njbeaches.org, to get the full scope of water quality in your area.

🍽️🍴🥄On August 1st, New Jersey's new 'Skip the Stuff' Law officially began, making single-use items available by request only. This means that items like disposable utensils, condiment packets, napkins and straws will no longer be included automatically in takeout orders.

60-90% of ocean waste is plastic, and threatens over 260 species including mammals, sea turtles and sea birds. By removing unnecessary waste from circulating, we are taking the steps needed to protect our blue planet and its inhabitants.

As recent summer storms pounded New Jersey coast, heavy rainfall washed bacteria, industrial pollutants, and litter into our local waterways. These contaminants threaten public health, harm pets and wildlife, and degrade the natural environment. In the Two Rivers region, these impacts are especially important because the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers are so crucial to recreation and quality of life.

Join us TOMORROW for the Rally for the Two Rivers Public Meeting, a free community gathering focused on protecting and improving water quality in the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers! You’ll hear updates on current water quality conditions, learn what towns and neighbors are doing to reduce pollution, ask questions, and share why the Two Rivers matter to you.

🌊 As of this week, two hundred and fifteen public bathing beaches remain open along the Jersey shore. Weekly bacteria monitoring conducted under the Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program (CCMP) on Monday, June 22nd, showed no bacteria levels exceeding the limit of 104 cfu/100 mL, and all beaches remained open.

⚠️ Environmental Coastal Monitoring (ECM) sampling conducted on Tuesday, June 23rd, shows that Enterococcus levels exceeded the safe level at the following beaches: Cedar Bridge Manor and Windward Beach in Brick Township, Summit in Island Heights Borough, Berkeley Island in Berkeley Township, Cedar Point in South Toms River, Beachwood Beach West in Beachwood, East Avon Rd in Pine Beach, Shrewsbury River Yacht Club in Fair Haven, Money Island in Toms River and 42nd Place Lagoon in Sea Isle City.

We've included a graph which shows the frequency of ECM advisories so far for the 2026 season.

🛫Coastal surveillance flights over the weekend, Monday and Thursday show that the beaches and water have been in good condition throughout the week. Flights were cancelled on Tuesday and today due to poor weather conditions.
Please visit www.njbeaches.org for current beach statuses, water quality sample results, and daily updates from coastal surveillance flights.
