Inflation is a real threat — especially for people sitting in cash. But if you own the right things, it can actually work in your favor. When prices rise, productive assets — stocks, real estate, businesses — tend to rise with them. Cash loses purchasing power over time. Ownership builds it.

Parasailing looks calm from the beach, but timing matters — catch the wrong wind and the experience changes completely.

The same is true with your investments. It's called sequence of returns risk. If the market drops while you're pulling money out, you're selling shares at a loss — leaving fewer shares to recover when it bounces back. Two people can have the exact same average return over 20 years and end up in completely different places, simply based on timing.

When and how you withdraw matters. It's worth having a plan built around that.

In 1799, 12-year-old Conrad Reed discovered a 17-pound gold nugget at what is now Reed Gold Mine. The family famously used the “yellow rock” as a doorstop before learning what it really was.

Gold has historically been viewed as a store of value and can play a role in a diversified portfolio, particularly during periods of uncertainty. But there’s an important distinction: gold doesn’t produce anything. It doesn’t pay a dividend, collect rent, or generate interest. Its return depends on someone being willing to pay more for it in the future.

At Water Oak Investments, we tend to favor productive assets — investments designed to produce a stream of income that has the potential to grow over time.

Does that mean there’s no place for gold? Not necessarily. It simply means every investment should have a purpose.
