The opening day of the UAW 39th Constitutional Convention included the adoption of convention rules and powerful remarks from AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, and Reverend Dr. Wendell Anthony of the Detroit Branch NAACP, who emphasized unity, justice, and the continued fight for workersβ rights.
Delegates also honored former UAW President Ray Curry by granting him the title of President Emeritus, while retired UAW Vice President Chuck Browning was recognized with the UAW Social Justice Award.
Additional convention business included approving reports from the Credentials and Rules Committees and passing several constitutional amendments, including the creation of permanent Health & Safety standing committees and officially establishing the UAW Veterans Department within the UAW Constitution.
