Janet Costa's customer Hannah recently closed on her first home in New Hampshire.

Janet worked with Hannah to get a Housing our Workforce (HOW) grant through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston. Hannah had saved a significant down payment, but the grant allowed her to find a home that better fit her needs in the area she wanted to live—the greater Keene region.

I’m proud to be part of this team finding the best financing options for our customers.

The Mascoma Bank mortgage lending team is always looking for ways to expand its offerings of grant opportunities for people in northern New England looking to purchase a home.

"If you can't afford to live in the area you work, what does that say about our communities? We are constantly on the hunt for any type of program we can partner with. And the list continues to grow," says Cathy Murray, Mortgage Loan Officer, who oversees the sales team.

In 2025, they again partnered with Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) to offer two grants—the Equity Builder Program and the HOW (Housing Our Workforce) grant. About $300,000 in funds was secured from FHLB to help homebuyers in the Mascoma Bank service area.

Each locality is different—that’s why being a community bank is critical. Some of the local groups Mascoma Bank lenders work with include Affordable Housing, Education and Development (AHEAD) inc., Twin Pines Housing, Local Deeds of Woodstock Community Trust, and Champlain Housing Trust.

"In total, we had just under a million dollars in grant funds in 2025," says Cathy. "Finding grant funding to supplement a buyer's downpayment is more work for the team, but we owe it to our borrowers to make sure they're getting the best possible options to buy their home. That's who Mascoma Bank is."
