This is my mom.

She moved from Washington State to Colorado and helped open several Skippers restaurants here.
She was the first female regional manager for the company.

Without her, I wouldn’t run as hard or work as much as I do today.

My mom always said:

“No matter what, you show up.”

If you party hard, you pay to play. You still show up the next day. You still do the work.

Our relationship has always been a little interesting, but when I found this picture the other day I couldn’t stop looking at it.

I love the smile on her face.

That smile is pride, grit, and a woman who knew how to get things done.

Happy International Women’s Day to the women who raised us tough. ❤️

There’s a reason JNB’s logo is an owl.

People keep asking about the owl in my logo.

It wasn’t some branding strategy.

The owl found me.

Owls can’t move their eyes.

So they move their heads.

They adjust.

That’s how I work.

When numbers don’t line up, I don’t panic.

I don’t get louder.

I change the angle.

I keep turning the problem until it makes sense.

Most businesses aren’t broken.

They’re just being looked at the wrong way.

The owl isn’t about being “wise.”

It’s about staying steady in the dark.

If you’ve worked with me, you know —I’ll keep turning it until it’s clear.

Read the full story behind the owl in my blog. Link in the comments. https://www.jnbservice.com/blog/owls-teach-business

I am not structured.
I don’t think in tidy bullet points.
I don’t build step-by-step manuals before I move.

I see patterns.

I jump lanes.

I solve things halfway through explaining them.

And honestly?
It works. Until it doesn’t.

I’ve tried hiring help.

Smart people. Capable people.

And eventually every single one of them hits the same wall.

“This is crazy.”

“I can’t learn it like this.”

“I can’t train this.”

The uncomfortable part? They’re right.
What I built works because I’m constantly translating it in real time.

It lives in my head. In my pacing. In how fast I connect dots.

When I tried to step away for a minute, everything wobbled.

Not because it’s failing. Because it’s dependent.

That tight-chest feeling isn’t workload.

It’s knowing the machine only runs when I'm the one narrating it.

So now I’m building something outside of me.

Because I have to.

Something that forces decisions to live somewhere other than my nervous system.

I think I've come a long long way in the past three months.

Lifeline - more to come.

Before pace-setting was a leadership buzzword, it was a rabbit.

Literally. In early racing, they used rabbits to run out front and set the speed. The job wasn't to win. It was to establish a tempo the rest of the field could follow.

In distance running, it evolved. A pacer doesn't just run fast — they run smart. They distribute energy across miles so the runners behind them don't burn out before the finish line.

I've been thinking about that a lot lately.

Because over the last four months, I've had to acknowledge something:

I am the pacesetter for my clients. For their businesses. Sometimes for their confidence.

And I don't always have the energy to be the rabbit.

I got vulnerable with my clients this week about that. The real version — not the polished version. That "Sara's always on it" is a reputation, not a permanent state of being.

But here's the best part of pace-setting that nobody talks about:

The goal isn't to run the whole race for everyone else.

It's to set the pace long enough for the people behind you to internalize it. To feel the rhythm in their own legs. To eventually not need you out front at all.

That's starting to happen. And it might be the most rewarding part of what I do.

I wrote more about this on the blog — the rabbits, the runners, and what it actually costs to be the one who always sets the tempo.
