Last week, I spoke with a lady who is unmarried and has no companion. As I worked with her to find a life insurance plan, I asked her "What happens if you become disabled since you have NO OTHER income, and approval for Social Security Disability could take months, even years?"

She didn't have a clue, which means...she is in a TERRIBLE position, and could lose everything she's worked so hard for if she becomes disabled for a period of time or permanently!

Ladies,

According to the CDC, you're expected to live almost 6 years longer than your male counterpart. Here are a few question you should ask yourself, particularly if you're married or have a significant other and he's the bread winner:

1. What does my retirement savings/income look like?
2. Can I afford to live on my income alone?
3. Is his life insurance coverage enough to cover his
his final expenses AND allow me to maintain a
suitable standard of living so that I don't have to
borrow from family and friends to pay bills?

Please understand that life insurance can provide you with security when your spouse or significant other can't!

My first born is now my client! She's in her second year of college and doing quite well. Even before starting a career, family and debt that comes naturally with just living, she's already thinking about her financial future...to include investments and life insurance. Her generation is very unique in that most of them like to spend money, but in some ways are more financially savvy than the generation before. Donovan is my youngest client yet! He graduated High School in 2022, and is off to college this fall. Donovan's mom, Sheree Fuller, has done an outstanding job helping him understand financial matters. According to Forbes Advisor, a survey published by Haven Life showed ONLY 22% of blacks value life insurance as a way to pass along generational wealth. Meaning, they only use life insurance for burial purposes, and do so intentionally because they DO NOT intend to leave their children or family anything (We've got to change this mindset). This was not the case for Sheree Fuller!

She understands the VALUE OF HER LIFE and how important it is to make sure her ONLY son doesn't have to worry about money once time has expired! So, she and I analyzed the policy she had been paying on for years, determined it wasn't ENOUGH and found one that fit her goal and her budget. Congrats, Sheree!
