Our hearts go out to all those affected by the weekend storms! They were horrific for some people and we are busy helping our clients navigate the claims process.
A common question today has been, "Is it worth it to file a claim?
Here is the short answer:
While homeowners (or business property) insurance is there to protect you from unexpected losses, claims can sometimes affect future premiums or policy renewal. Every insurance company evaluates claims differently, so we can't always predict exactly how a claim will impact your rate or renewal eligibility.
If the repair cost is only slightly above your deductible, it is best to consider whether filing a claim makes sense. It's worth comparing the estimated repair cost to your deductible. If the damage is only slightly above your deductible, the insurance payment may be relatively small, while your premium could increase for several years.

If your insurance carrier has asked you to complete an audit, it's important to respond as soon as you can. These audits help make sure your policy accurately reflects your business based on things like payroll, sales, or the work you actually performed during the policy period.

Ignoring the request can be expensive. If you don't complete the audit, the insurance carrier may issue a non-compliance penalty or calculate your premium using an estimate—often resulting in a much higher premium 💰than what you may actually owe. In some cases, it can even affect your ability to renew coverage.
