Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is getting worse — even as other waterways in the region show signs of recovery.

A report released Wednesday by Blue Water Baltimore found water quality in the Inner Harbor has declined over the past 15 years, painting what the group called “a growing crisis” despite incremental improvements in some metrics.

“Clearly, the status quo isn’t working,” said Alice Volpitta, Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper with Blue Water Baltimore. “The question we have to ask ourselves is: do we want our children to inherit a Harbor in decline? Or are we ready to really commit to the solutions we know do work so we can all enjoy a healthier future?”

Churchill Downs has reached a deal to acquire the intellectual property rights to the Preakness Stakes and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for $85 million, the company announced Tuesday.

The agreement with 1/ST Maryland LLC, an affiliate of 1/ST Racing, includes all trademarks and associated rights tied to the two races. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be finalized after the 2026 Preakness.

Under the terms, Churchill Downs will license the intellectual property back to the State of Maryland, allowing the races to continue in Baltimore in exchange for an annual fee.

BOARDWALK ERA ENDS: Ocean City Permanently Retires Iconic Tram

Ocean City’s trams have made their final run after 60 years of service. The decision follows the death of a two-year-old boy struck by one in August 2024. Town officials suspended service immediately after the tragedy and initially hoped to restore it after safety reviews. But after thoughtful review and extensive discussion, they've decided the trams won't return. "This decision was not made lightly," a town spokesperson said. "The town acknowledges the long-standing tradition and fond memories many residents and visitors have of the Boardwalk tram."

The shutdown costs Ocean City $1.56 million in lost revenue. The trams carried up to 4,000 passengers on peak summer weekends at $5 per ride along the 2.9-mile boardwalk. Many elderly visitors and families depended on the service to navigate the full stretch. Town officials say they're exploring new ways to connect visitors to boardwalk attractions but haven't revealed specifics. The six-decade tradition that helped define Ocean City summers is now officially over.
