The U.S. stock market is getting way ahead of itself. Chief Market Officer Eric Parnell, CFA is concerned about a few things in this week's Simplified Financial Economic & Market Report:

🦾 The U.S. stock market has rallied too far, too fast since late March lows, with concentration narrowing to only 38% of S&P 500 stocks outperforming the index, creating fragility as fewer stocks shoulder the burden of driving gains.

🛢️ Federal Reserve rate hike expectations — driven by oil prices exceeding $100/barrel and rising inflation — represent a net liquidity drain from markets, undermining a key pillar that supported the prior bull case.

🪫 Semiconductor stocks, having surged more than 80% in two months, exhibit bubble-like characteristics; their historically elevated volatility and tendency to decline 40–70% during downturns pose meaningful downside risk, particularly amid a rising rate environment.

In this week’s Simplified FInancial Market Insights, Eric Hough, Eric Parnell, CFA, and Evan Coffey dive into the latest with the markets:

🛡️ Private Markets Noise vs. Reality: Redemption headlines at BlackRock and Blue Owl are alarming on the surface, but the 5% quarterly liquidity cap is a structural safeguard, and comparisons to 2008 miss the mark.

🎈 Stagflation Warning Signs: CPI at 3.8%, gas above $4.50, a 10-year at a 52-week high, and zero cuts priced in for 2026 paint a 1970s-style backdrop for incoming Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.

🪫 Infrastructure is the AI Bottleneck: With hyperscalers spending $700B+ in 2026, the constraint isn’t capital — it’s power and grid capacity, creating a growing role for private market investment globally.

Evan Coffey and Eric Hough have been looking at the AI capex story from two angles, and they point to the same problem. This earnings season cut cleanly between hyperscalers with external cloud revenue — Alphabet Inc., Amazon, Microsoft — and those without. The market rewarded the former and punished the latter. But the deeper constraint isn't on balance sheets, it's on the power grid. Up to 30% of planned U.S. data center capacity for 2026 is delayed due to permitting, equipment shortages, and grid bottlenecks. Capital is moving at software speed. Infrastructure is not.

I am blessed to have an amazing assistant supporting me daily! I just received this message from a client and want to share it to brag on Genesis for a moment.

Hi there, thanks for having Genesis take care of that transfer. I just wanted to tell you that I'm very impressed with her. She is so professional when she calls. I had updated my tax withdrawal amount and I said something in the conversation, and when she went to create the paperwork she noticed that it was still at a lower amount and she called me back to tell me that. I thought when I put it in the federal system that it applied to everything and I thought that was pretty darn cool because somebody else probably would not have noticed that. So give her a big Kudos from a customer.

Investment Analyst, Evan Coffey, breaks down the growing debate around Big Tech AI spending in this week’s Simplified Financial Economic & Market Report:

💰 AI spending is exploding: Major tech companies are projected to spend hundreds of billions on AI infrastructure, with estimates topping $1 trillion by 2027.

🏗️ Investors want proof of returns: Markets are no longer rewarding AI spending alone. Companies are now being judged on whether that investment is generating measurable revenue growth.

☁️ Cloud giants stood out this quarter: Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon showed strong AI driven cloud revenue growth, helping justify their massive capital expenditures.

📉 Not all AI spending is viewed equally: Companies without clear external revenue validation faced heavier scrutiny, even after strong earnings results.

🔍 The focus is shifting: Wall Street’s question is no longer “Who is spending the most on AI?” but “Who can turn that spending into sustainable profits?”
